I did read many issues that the lenses might hv issue on slow af or pic with out of focus. Best is still go for the original mount.

I think you can use the zoom in function to help u manual focus.

I don't think it's a good idea to repaint the outer coating body. Just use it even the paint is coming off. The white coating just gives it a nice feel only. I believe any coating will slowly falls off after years of rough using.
