If you using Original Nikon EN-EL3E, there no need for you to change the type of battery in the battery setting. For other types of battery like AA rechargeable battery, then yes.

You using a DX camera, cropped sensors. 17mm in your D300 will be around 25mm. Therefore 12mm will give you 18mm. 17-50mm & 18-200mm. With 35mm prime lens.:)
