Problems with 24mm f1.4. Shallow DOF, Camera or User problem?

actually a lot of difference. on uwa or wa lens ie 14-24 @ 14mm 2.8 , i can barely focus on low contrast object when using edge af point. for telephoto lens otoh, its not a problem. looks like +15 is the lucky number for D700 + 24G users :)

Problems with 24mm f1.4. Shallow DOF, Camera or User problem?

if you just bought your lens, talk to the shop and ask for a new one. some ppl in outside forums also expressed this and seems like 1 out of 2 copy they try is like this. I currently have similar issue on D700. but with D3 its spot on hence I just live with it :/ seems that WA lens and wide...

    Wide Angle Lens

actually 12-24 DG distortion is quite -> very bad for interior (when used in FX) .

    Need help on auto-focus problem

Make sure when you mount your lens , it 'clicks' firmly on the mount. F-- is normally when the lens contact are not talking to the camera. It can be both ways , but most of the time .. its lens related. See it more and more with the new plastic mount lens :(

    Metering Question

DSLR are tend to be less forgiving than compact cameras as compacts are designed for happy p&s people. For landscape , I would suggest to use CWA metering with 8mm and meter on the horizon. Activate your D300 Dlighting and set it to Low and see the result then. Personally I rarely use P...

    AFS 35mm on FX body

Be careful on the distortion it produce. http://etienne.multiply.com/reviews/item/12 AFS 35/1.8 DX vs AiS 35/1.4 but it is a fun lens to use in concerts :)

    Nikon 58 f1.2 Noct-Nikkor

I own one a while back and sold it to a collector that can appreciate it more than me. Personally with development of sensor nowadays , there are no point of using 1.2 lens anymore .. especially with MF ones. @ f/2.0, they were on par with my AFD 50/1.4 hence can't justify keeping it...

    D700 High Speed Crop (HSC)?

D700 shots in normal max of 5fps regardless in FX or DX mode. With MB-D10 and EN-EL4/a batteries or 8AA enables it to shoot at 8fps at CH mode regardless its in FX or DX mode. This feature is what beat 5D and 5D Mk II away in terms of fast paced photography :)

    Travelling lenses advise

Agree. For a family trip, you are not creating strobist or ultra sharp photos rite ? Just go with the basic. On my honeymoon early this year, I only carry D700 , 17-35 and my old 28-105 + SB-800 [as I don't have SB-600 anymore and the SB-900 is much bigger :D ] on the compact Billingham...

Anybody using mainly Carl Zeiss lenses for your Nikon DSLR ?

D1 series ? Only Nikon pro and semi pro range has ability for auto exposure using those Zeiss ZF lens line. Reason is entry level and hobbyist cameras do not have that prong to determine what aperture the lens is on.

D700 virtual horizon activation using Fn or Preview button issue

A .. thanks sifu :D So I can't expect the cockpit look will be shown when I press the assigned buttons ? A bit odd I would say as sometimes when I want to quickly check the horizon, I have to dig deep into the menus + the assignment looks like going to the same "code" Maybe I can...

Best pictures taken with your D700

Not my best, but something to test. ISO 6400 - Nikon 50/1.2 @ f/2.0 (iirc) - 18W incandescent lighting on top. Personally, D700 does match up to 5D Mk 2. We test it last weekend with my friend 5D Mk2 and now I can say .. "noise? what noise" to the Canon crowd at my photo club.
