The Pixel Shift Diaries

K1+Samyang 14/2.8 (pixel shift)

What the pixel shift IQ reminds me of is the Foveon o/p from my DP1m.
That per pixel sharpness, but without the downsides of the very slow Foveon RAW processor, limited DR and magenta cast in the shadows.

K1+Samyang 14/2.8

This time, using a dual program workflow to get the best out of both programs.
RT for the pixel shift processing into a TIFF and then using Lightroom for the better highlight/shadow recovery and brush tools.

I think I like this scheme enough that I'll use it more often.
The learning just does not end.
I had thought a TIFF workflow would never be part of what I do, but after trying it out, I do think it works well and the pixel shift files justifies the workflow for me.

Full size file available here as usual for my pixel shift exploration.
Its "4 clicks" of the "+" sign to get to 100% (or click all the way in, then back out by 1 click)

In this last one you are nailing it with the new techniques bro. Awesome! I would happily wait ten years for this kind of performance. Imagine what a pixel shifted medium format snap processed in this way would be like!

Thanks for the encouragement.
The K1 performance in pixel shift mode is impressive indeed.
If you compare its o/p using the DPReview test shot comparator, it does better than the Medium Format cameras (yes, even the new Fuji). ;)

Pentax K1+FA43ltd with pixel shift

On another note, the Composition Adjustment function of the Pentax cameras is just fantastic.
I'd say it adds a few hundred to the 'cost' of each lens when it uses the feature for a pict.
Makes every lens a 'slight' shift lens. :D

Really invaluable when needing to keep the lens level to prevent keystone distortions.

More to the pixel shift diaries.

IMGP8215-PS-1-1 by jenkwang, on Flickr

This time with the K24/2.8.
Not the best resolution wise on the edges, but imo, certainly still rather good for the price, size, f2.8 max aperture.

Here's a shot of the pixel shift settings used.

As can be seen, this one is in custom and a few of the settings have been unchecked.
In this case, I've found this to mask off as little as possible.

Constructing on the top of the World by jenkwang, on Flickr

Wanted a mid tele lens that was lighter and smaller since it was for cityscape shooting only, so I reached for the venerable Takumar 135/3.5.
Nothing lacking in this lens despite its grand age.

I almost can read off the newspaper covering the windscreen of the crane. :D

What are the 6 bands on the right side of snap immediately above? Don't see them on previous photos.

They should remake the Hitchcock film Rear Window with the main guy using a K1 in pixel shift mode. :)

Those are the crane cables moving in the wind.

Yeah, maybe Pentax should do a commercial along the lines of Rear Windows :D

details and resolution are awesome. wondering how the K-70 compares to the K-1 in pixel shift.

Yes, details and resolution is actually the best out there for now if you compare it on the DPReview studio scene comparator (even against Medium Format).

I would expect the K70 to give the same quality as the K1 but in the apsc format.
