Cokin type third party filters

Hi All,

Was wondering if any of you here had tried the Cokin third party filers.

The price is less than half of Cokin. The material is acrylic.

Any comment on the pros and cons will be very much appreciated.

Cokin is already a well known third party France brand filter for cheap and poor photographers almost 40 years, so now you are looking for another third party knock off product of Cokin?

I think I will use them as coaster instead.

One brand using the same dimensions and acrylic material is Tian Ya. Many report colour casts when using them, especially the ND types. You get what you pay for.

Cokin is dirt cheap... and already exhibits some serious issues when stacked.

The expensive ones are Lee filters.
Hitech used to be good but now has serious issues as well. Their more expensive line Formatt filters are good but very expensive.
If you want cheap and good, you can try out Haida filters. But not all their filters are great. Their 10 stop NDs are incredibly good.

The purpose of the thread is because I want to try out using ND and because I have Nikon and Oly system, tot it will be more economical to get a square type filter so as to share between the two system

I would recommend talking to PhotosphereSG. They have a 85mm filter holder that will work OK without vignetting even for Fullframe Nikon at 16mm UWA. That will reduce the amount/size of gear you have to carry, as well as saving you some money. What I got was Haida's 10stop ND, and some GNDs from a European brand. I got it all from PhotosphereSG. You can check them out or talk to one of the two bosses. They are photographers themselves so they use the gear. Best to pick their minds and get a system that can best suit your needs.

I am back after spending a night and 3/4 today reading all 29 pages in the filter guide thread

One question, assuming shutter speed is 1/60 and I am using ND2, the calculation will be 0.03333. How do we convert back to usable value in the camera ? (Sorry if it sounds noob, but I got F9 for math)....

Any help will be much appreciated. Thks

Don't use decimal fraction.
ND2 halves the amount of light. Therefore the calculation is 1/60 / 1/2 = 1/30. This, converted into a decimal fraction, is 0.03.

Thanks for your suggestion. It will be good if you can share the name of the apps cos I use my phone primarily for phone calls, sms and whatsapp. Not into downloading stuff into my phone...
