Depends on what sort of night sky objects you want to shoot.

Personally I use a Nikon 28mm f2.8 Ai-S lens. It costs about 400 dollars used (two years ago).

Hope I am still not too late. You can start off with any wide angles, and you can let it expose for maximum of 30s. The more powerful is your lens, you will have to do with faster shutter speed. Otherwise, star trials will occurred.
