Nikon FX or DX camera D750 or D7200

Hi,

Have been using D90 for a long while and thinking is time to upgrade.
Not sure if I should upgrade to full frame FX but most I do is travel photography so camera weight might be a concern for me.
Recently looking at the latest flagship model D750 vs D7200 (or D7100) both have their strength, of course price is the major difference too.
Feel free to comment and enlighten me for consideration.

Go for D7200.. Travel light.. Remember to get good lens.. Prime or recently released 16-80mm zoom.

If weight is a concern why not switch to mirrorless? U can bring a whole body + lens kit for the weight of dslr lens.

If you already have the lenses for FX then you might as well just go with the D750, otherwise the D7200 would do just as well .....going full frame is only a matter of time .......

Let me share with u my experience.

I start from D5100 to D600 to D800E to D7200

From DX to FX and back to DX.
There is definitely noticeable IQ diff from D5100 to D600. Less noise n better bokeh, and D800E really have better resolution.

I pick D7200 cause I need long reach.
D7200 can produce great IQ and pic is still clean up to ISO3200. Depend what u need and whether is it worth it to invest so much more for slight improvement in IQ.

I have both D750 and D7200. Also had the D90 you are using some years ago.

Coming from the D90 you will immediately appreciate the following from both D750 and D7200:

Focusing spread and speed, 51point, it almost fills the screen for D7200
ISO capability, the ISO12800 from both D750 and D7200 sized down to 12MP equivalent is like the D90's ISO1600
Faster frame rate
File size
LCD looks much better
Menu smoother, more customizable and easier to use
U1 and U2 settings
Body feels nicer to hold, and sturdier

D750 and D7200 differences:
D750 better focusing
D750 better ISO capability and performance, is comparable to D4s and many feel its better.
D750 way better color transition during heavy edits or when shoot conditions are not ideal, it mixed lighting, low light high ISO situations.
D7200 way better price. Buy 2 for the price of 1 D750. Or buy 1 and use the remaining money get a few good lenses.

For travel, of course D7200, unless you rich. For work, of course D750, unless you need the longer DX reach.

You will be happier with either one, can't go wrong.

Weight advantage of DX vs FX not fully realized as Nikon has very few DX lenses worthy of 24mp sensors, D7200 the best of them. Many kit lenses simply not good enough for 24 MP DX. Weight difference between D750 and D7200 is minimal. So unless you're going to be happy with selecting from 12-24, 10-24, 35/1.8 DX, 16-80, 17-55, 18-140, you'll end up getting FX lenses. Especially tele zoom. But you'll gain reach.

I got a D750 its very good and price is reasonable for a full frame, but for travelling i use compact camera which is light weight small size and best for street photography. Good compact cameras are very travel friendly, so far best compact which i used before Ricoh GR and Fuji X100T check out my street photography while i travel http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrmeng/

Any travel lens recommended ? is 16-80mm f2.8 a good lens ?

More resolution mainly.
D7200 gives 24mp in dx mode (native)
D810 gives 16mp in dx mode. (Worst for the d750:600)

I still prefer to do my birding with d810 coz in dx/1.2x mode, i get better af coverage then the d7200.

Simply put: You get less pixels shooting in a D750 cropped mode setting as oppose to the a D7200 entire DX sensor. You get more details to make bigger cleaner enlargement compared to the one taken by the D750 or any FX sensor DSLR

Imagine 12K dots squeeze into 2x4inche size and now imagine 12K dots squeeze into 1x2 inch size. Now take a scissor and cut the 2x4 inch to the size of 1x2 inche now you count the dots and see if you get still 12K of dots.

Get my analogy of explanation?

Which by the way is where sensor tech will go. The same density of megapixel in a DX sensor will now be cut larger to FX size to allow for more higher resolution shots. So it is not like how they can add more denser megapixels to new tech FX sensor to up the resolution but that tech is already here. They cut larger pieces of the DX sensor variety made to use in FX bodies which I think will spell the end of DX DSLRs some day soon. Can't recall where I read that some time ago. Sensors are made a larger waffer disc and cut to size (cookie cut out fabrication) similar like how they made motherglass for modern day TV monitors.

But there is another issue that comes with more higher resolution ability, existing lens (including possibly high end lens) will be where will let you down as better quality of glass/finishing will be required to take advantage of that higher resolution.

Yes agreed, the 7200 is not that light either.

If weight is the primary concern, get the mirrorless Fuji XT-1 ... some more now got good sales in their Dec offer !

Wow, initially I tried to read and understand then it got more complicated until my head spins. OK, the answer I got from you is, FX crop mode not as good as DX under the same condition.

So may I ask another question? As long as I settle the distance issue (be it be and tele convertor or whatever) which will be better?
