Hi guys,

Im new to photography and would like to purchase my very first DSLR after a year. 6 months ago, i was targeting the Nikon D5300 as the reviews are good and recently, the Nikon D5500 has been released and is also the first touchscreen Nikon DSLR which makes me consider again if i should get the D5300.

I'm having trouble between the Nikon D5300 18-140mm and D5500 18-55mm, both of them are around the same price. so my question is, should i go for the D5300 or D5500? I know these 2 DSLR are very similar with some small changes such as the grip but is it worth to forgo a better lens for touchscreen or the other way round?

Thanks in advance for any advice given.

Get the latest model in the series.

Btw if you are only going to buy it in a year's time, then you should only consider when that time comes.

Hi, sorry i made a mistake. What i meant was that im finally purchasing a dslr after a year of saving up. Thanks for the advice but would you explain to me why forgo the 18-140mm lens?

Jun Kwan Goh...none of us bros can really decide what camera you like...you have to figure this out for yourself.

Because you will buy more lenses down the road very soon. 18-140 is not exactly a much better lens. It just gives you more focal length. You can easily buy the 55-200 for not much money. Or you can also buy the 18-140. Just look at personal classifieds section if you want to get a pre-owned one. Even new, the 55-200 or 55-300 is not expensive.

Thanks, i think what you said make sense. Actually im thinking of getting sigma 70-300mm macro lens.

Just note that the lens Sigma 70-300 macro that you are thinking of getting is not a true macro lens (1:1 magnification). But it will nevertheless serve you if you need the reach of 300mm.

Yes i am aware that it is only 0.5x (1:2). But for a beginner like me, it should do pretty decent i guess. Other macro lens are too expensive.

Ur issue is $$.

Have u tried checking technogadget.com?
it's a quite reputable on line camera shop, and I would buy tamron 17-50 f2.8non vc Instead of the kit Len, if I were u

Just check for u. The price diff between 5500 to 5300 is less than $100. Get the latest la.

i will suggest u to buy tamron 70-300 VC and tamron 17-50mm f2.8 non vc.
u can look for used set selling over cs with local warranty. if u want better len at lower price
