I was there now and haven't step in to their property and took photos of their building. They (security) stop me from taking even I am outside. I call police in the end cause I not taking any interior and was on the main road. I question security, why he go over sea also take photos of other building, can? I feels jealousy from them as I holding a DSLR, if mobile phone, they sure hack care one.

Perhaps it's different now. I went there to board a coach to Legoland in January. It was early morning and I was snapping away inside and outside of the building. Walked past a few guards, nobody said anything about taking photographs. Was using a rangefinder.

Update : Officer come, listen to our story. He says just if no harm, just give them name n contract will do. Don't show your IC, cause that's what the security want from me. Officer told me to del a photo of them as I take as evidence due they (security) returning back to office before officer come.

Officer told me that the security thought I spy, ya, spy in a board day light standing there taking photos of building, jokers! If want to spy, just use a video camera, walk n take video will do. I even told officer that I inside jem n do time lapse, also no stop with tripod! Plus I was taking from all angles of big box before got caught at a junction. Furthermore no sign of saying "no photography" over there. I show officer, a photo of the new hospital opposite, why no security cross the road and stop me?

Need to complain to big box management as they having security that using their own rules and preventing other taking photos. Security even have camera phone, I also can says they spy if bride enough. Piss off with them, let their management handle them. If big box going to hold a photo competition, I will tell them not to as your security very ON!

If you are standing on public domain to take photographs, nobody can stop you. If you are within their premises, it's different.

But no sign of no photography plus I still on the pavement, not on the road which lead to their building. Anyway, I am right, they can't stop me. Will write to their management that those security only "work" when they having their break outside, else inside office and don't bother to stop me when I been taking photos last night in their premises!

Actually when I ask them to show me the rules on black/white which says no photography, they can't produce, officer also agreeds that no such rule, that's why they got no right to stop me. Those securities obviously scare they been question by management as cctv to monitor them, they just wayang only.

if the place where you were standing and taking photos, the compound outside the building, is maintain by them, they have the right to stop you.

you can write to the property management office for clarification.

at the meantime, have some herbal tea, not easy to understand what you are writing now.

Summary (after a can of 100+ n coconut drink)

I took photos of Big Box Building (Jurong East) within their compound, on 12/03/15 around 1930 and was not stop by any security. I went off to work after that.
13/03/15. I was walking from the other side of Big Box, took some photos from opposite, no one stop me.
I then went to the side of the building (opposite of when I am last night). Stood on PAVEMENT, not even on their red paved road, I was stop for taking photos by security.
I told them it's for hobby and they want my name and contract. They don't have writing material, they want to take photo of my IC/ID!
I told them that's not the way and I got right to take photos since I still on pavement aka public area. They can't stop me from taking photos. I told them that I will call police, they dares me.
They went into office and enjoy air con and laugh at me sun burn over there for waiting for police but luckily for me, there is shade!
Police Officer came, listen to our story. One of the officer also went to the spot which I took the photos.
I told police, no sign of 'no photography' plus, I ever did photography inside JEM and was not stop, even with tripod. Policeman agreed.
Police says I am ok to go on taking, as long next time give them name and contract number will do, no IC required!
Security go hide one corner and chit chat after questioning, obviously they only work while outside idling and scare of been questioned due to there are CCTV when I am there to take photos.
Photographer 1, Security 0!

I dare to challenge those (3 to 4 of them) security cause I know my rights. Call police, I also can continue. Must complain to their management, else their work too easy, enjoy air con whole day only! I now also wondering, should they go chase/stop the google car then!? :sticktong;p

Color still fresh and also, colorful. Plus the blue sky, 6 colors, white n black if consider in, heh heh!

i think all these restrictions are getting paranoid. While privacy and IP are important you can't shut off photography which were around for donkey years. If you enter a private property, then naturally you are required to seek permission before taking photo. However, if that private property is accessible for general public to enjoy, eg MBS, then why the need for permission?

Taking photo of a building on a public place in general should not require the owner permission. If they are so worry, then please shield it from public eyes. However, if you public that image of their building on some questionable site or article, then surely you should seek their permission.

Frankly, these are simple common sense thing but complicated by people. Millions of tourists took photos of Singapore all over the place. What are doing about it?

if ones look like tourists taking photos of their buildings with handphone or pns, they won't be bother so much about them, such photos mostly for personal keepsake. unlikely will be use for any commercial usage.

but when somebody setting up a tripod, or using pro looking camera, taking photos of their building, of course they have to stop the photographers, whether the photographers claim the photos strictly for personal keepsake or not, if not, there will be more and more photographers come and take photos there inevitably, beside, some buildings, in fact most buildings do allow photographing and filming for commercial purposes, of course these requests have to go through proper channels with paying a fee.

as such, taking photos without seeking permission not permissible.

I guess one needs to know that when you published without the permission of the owner and the subject has an identification or personal, you are obligated and responsible for that publication.

You can't shoot a person walking the street and say he is a crook right?

U should asked for security officer's name and number and tell police to look for him when they arrive. Then u go inside air con to enjoy.

Writing to their mgmt will not bring you any justice...you should write to the press or Stomp....it will shame them if you are right....also to create the awareness so that those security wannabe knew their authority is in-check by public....they can't do whatever they like in a modern society like ours ;(

in any publication houses, photographers' job is to supply photos to the editors, photographers have no say on how and will his photos being use.

and there is this thing call "editorial photo usage", editors can use publish certain photos "taken without seeking permission from the identifiable individuals appear in the photos" aka "non released photos" under such usage.

I talk to a army personal, he says only photos of camps or restricted areas are taken away from satellite image. So, what is the big fuss from those security when whole world already know how your building looks like already. Even Google Street map(if updated), show the building, then go sue Google.

Obviously those securities are slacking on job as they are outside already and having their break, scare top ask why I taking photos cause they don't know that we can take. As there are cctv, they stopped me as to show they are working. If they come out from their office and stopped me, that will be a different story. Should find out which security company n complain to them!

Although photographer may not have a say which photo to be published. The publisher is registered and they are liable for what they published. all publications need to be licenced here.

I agreed with you,
generally editors are the smarter people, so they get to sit behind the desk.
