Hi, I'm interested in purchasing my very first DSLR to take photos as a hobby/for fun.
And I really cannot decide on what model of a camera I should buy. I prefer buying a new camera, but wouldn't mind a second hand model recommendation as well.

My budget is around: $700
I would prefer Canon because I have a 18mm - 55mm kit lens.

Could you guys help me out/give me some insights? Thanks!

Hi I think you should read the sticky threads

This is correct manners in forum before starting new thread

thank you

First of all, welcome to ClubSNAP.
If you wish to stick to Canon then you can simply check the camera line up and the features of each body. Stay with the xxxD series, or have a look at the xxxxD series. Don't waste too much time over certain features.
Unlikely that you will get a new camera for your budget. Do also consider other accessories you will need: bag, cleaning set, spare battery..
For second hand offers please check the Buy & Sell section here.

On the other hand:
The kit lens is a simple and cheap lens. The latest models showing a pretty good performance, though. But sticking to a camera brand because you own the kit lens is not really convincing to me. There are many different options by now with m4/3 and other mirror-less systems. Best you drop by any camera shop of maybe the next department store and have a hands on check on all the different makers and models. Ergonomics, weight, menu design etc play their part as well when choosing a camera.

Hello kcgwei, going down to the stores and trying out the cameras is definitely a great suggestion by Octarine and an important first step. You may like a camera by reading specs sheets and seeing product images but totally hate its ergonomics or menu system.

Definitely do try cameras out physically in stores unless you're dead confident you won't regret a purchase.

Once you're settled on a decision, you might want to consider secondhand options too.

don't restrict urself to Canon becos of e lens u hv. u still need to think of future upgrading.

the lens u holding is very basic so over time u may change to over lens

if you really prefer Canon, I would recommend EOS 100D body.
If Canon is not a must, you may wanna try your hands on other brands(Nikon/Sony/Fujifilm/Pentax/Olympus/Panasonic/etc) and types(Mirrorless, etc) for your hobby / fun.

Good Luck and have fun!

Go and try in the shops, then look for the camera that you like in the personal classifieds section.

Entry level cameras with kit lens and good condition, some still with warranty can be gotten for less than $500.
