DSLR safety in Ho Chi Minh

The exact same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. The snatch was at 8:30am in the morning outside Notre Dame I am now much more cautious in Saigon as the level of crime has increased significantly in the last five years. This does not only affect tourists. I know many local people who have had laptops and iphone stolen out of their hand as they were making calls. Make sure your travel insurance can cover the FULL LOSS of your camera and lens. I now have 10k of cover after my previous insurance left me with a big loss .

Any recommendations on such travel insurance?

Brought my 7dmk2 recently to hcmc ..Hanoi and halong bay.....the locals will be interested in ur camera..but as long as u don't leave it dangling because u.it should be safe...I was worried that even my hotel concierge asked to use my camera to take photos of me n my gf...but at least he returned it..he was just another photo enthusiast..just gotta know one dslr like mine can buy 2 scooters there..so yeah...I even got approached by a drug dealer in Hanoi...quickly hid my camera away...

U serious? one dslr can buy 2 scooters there.
Wow like that I have to be careful as I will be gg to Hanoi & Halong Bay on 28 Jan to 1 Feb.
I think I will only take out my dslr when needed.

Thinking of take some night shot in Hanoi, btw did you capture some sunset or sunrise at Halong Bay?

Just sling your camera across your shoulder...

Yea the price of a scooter there is about 1000+sg..So for my 7d mk2 can buy about 2..the time I went.which is November was not fantastic..best time to go is sep n oct..best weather...that time I went it was quite foggy n cloudy at halong bay..So no sunrise n sunset

....u should check the weather forecast..n the tour guide also said at halong bay the gov is controllingit all..if the tours can proceed into the bay or not despite the weather looking nice....My group was lucky as we manage to go in..after we reached back the new tours couldn't go in..everything was suspended halfa day...

Really depends what scooter you are talking about, as well as new or old. $1000 will get you an old 2nd hand one.

Need some advise.
I will be heading to Halong Bay and Sung Sot Cave is part of the package tour.
I just wondering do I need a external flash in the cave to brighten up?

Not unless you intend to disturb anybody else with your flash.
The caves are partially quite big, trying to light them up with your flash makes little sense but will definitely destroy the atmosphere there.
PS: how does your question relate to the original thread topic? Please start your own thread next time instead of crashing into other topics.

I find my question is straight to the point; no much discussion abt it; moreover it just a one time off hence I don't intend to start a new thread.
If this simple question crashing to other topics then I would like to say sorry to TS and everybody; didn't mean to crash your thread and public topic.
PS: Mod, I very very sorry as I still new here; please forgive me...:(

Actually, once I left my point and shoot camera in a cafe in HCM (First time ever I have been so careless!).

The waiter chased after me across the road to return the camera to me.

So, its not all bad cases there.

Any advice on travelling to Hanoi? Safety of carrying DSLRs? Thanks!

Brought my Canon 7D2 (with no grip) to HCM with my TTP Digital Holster 40. When not in used, I put it back into the Holster and sling it to my side.

I would recommend using a good (anti-theft) strap say PacSafe if you are not using a bag. Switch the sling to the inner side when walking along the road so as to make it difficult for snatch theft on wheels.
Try not to hold camera in 1 hand and then smartphone in another hand to check (google) maps. These are tell tale signs of "I am travelling"

Hanoi? Nothing to worry. Use the advice given above for HCMC and you will be perfectly fine. Hanoi is much quieter and less touristy than HCMC. Big crowds are mostly around the HCM Memorial sites and night markets. Everything else is quite relaxed.

What camera and lens combination would you advise?
Intending to shoot cityscapes / old town...
Not heading to Halong Bay...
Options available are:
1. Nikon D750 + 14-24/2.8, 24-70/2.8VR, 70-200/2.8 VR FL or 24-120/4VR
2. Pentax K1 + 15-30/2.8 + 24-70/2.8
3. Pentax K5 or K30 + 16-50/2.8 + 50-135/2.8 + Sigma 8-16
4. Olympus EM1 + 12-40/2.8 + 17/1.8 + 12/2 + 25/1.8

I like the Nikon D750 or Pentax K1, but theft is a concern. I was previously mugged in Paris...

Advice is much appreciated...

I have not been to Hanoi but have been to HCMC a few years ago. Was using a Nikon D5000 DSLR then. Was alright but i think the locals might not be interested in an entry level camera. Now that i have a Nikon D750 & Nikkor 24-120mm f4 lens, i always choose this combo for my oversea vacation trip. It's a bit heavy but it's more versatile (need not have to change lenses frequently). I always try to keep my gear in the bag after taking some street shots. U can consider adding a prime lens like 50mm or 35mm too.
On the other hand, if u join an oversea photo shoot with a group of photographers, i believe it's much safer. I have not join one yet, it's just my opinion, i could be wrong.

If alone and theft is a concern, I would just bring the Olympus EM1+12-40f2.8

I went Hanoi with a photography group, however I didn't feel that it's unsafe, and nobody got anything stolen during the trip.

I brought along my Pentax K1 + DFA 24-70/2.8.
Occasional unwelcome glances. I'm glad it's a lesser known brand.
Got scammed by taxis.
Bad haze. Perpetual. Visibility 250-500m.
