Where to buy a cheaper hygrometer?

Hi. TS, hope you don't mind, gonna ride on this thread with a question. I went to sim lim tower in search of a hygrometer. The cheapest one was for $23. A digital hygrothermometer. Can't find a cheap analog one to test the effectiveness of my dry cabinet. Anyone else has had lunch purchasing a cheaper hygrometer?

Edit. Found a shop at the basement. $8.00 only. Analog hydro/thermometer.

Hi Norman, I've moved your post to a separate thread.

To answer your question, you want cheap, and you are willing to wait, you can try ebay. This is the one I got, usually approx US$5-6. Did the salt test with it, looked accurate.

Selling about $20+ locally if you can't wait: http://www.testmeter.sg/webshaper/store/viewProd.asp?pkProductItem=149
It looks like the same thing with their own logo to me, but they do claim theirs has better parts compared to cheaper versions, which is possible. For my purposes, to act as a simple check on my dry cabinet, the cheaper one has worked fine so far.

You can get dirt cheap analog ones for $2 at Daiso, but might defeat the purpose as the accuracy is probably lacking.

Thanks Kandinsky.

I just bought a analogue one from sim lim. Will go home and check if it tallies with the readings from the digital one in my dry cab. And if I have time, shall do a salt test too and update so that CSers will have yet another option to choose from.

Don't assume your dry cabinet one is accurate. I bought a digital hygrometer from mustafa and realized that it doesn't tally with my dry cabinet. My dry cabinet shows lower than the stand alone hygrometer. So I did the salt test on the standalone hygrometer and it shows pretty accurate at 75%.
So personally I would rather pay more for a reliable one.

If hunting and buying a cheap below $10 hygrometer make good logical sense after spending a small fortune on camera gear ( which you are trying to protect) and then investing in a electric dry cabinet. You are only doing yourself a disservice to NOT do a salt test first to see if that cheap hygrometer is accurate to begin with. :what:

I expected this piece of advice to be coming. And I do agree. Will be performing the salt test to verify the accuracy of both the analog and digital meters.

On that note I believe that the price of the meter is not a determinant of the accuracy it gives. Regardless of getting a cheap one or expensive one a salt test should be done to verify accuracy. So I decide to take a $8 gamble to see if I can stick with the cheaper one or in the case the salt test proves otherwise, look for a viable alternative.

Roger that. I am curious about the accuracy of the cheaper analog ones and I will be conducting the salt test soon to see how accurate both the digital and analog ones are. Shall update over here.

Speaking of salt tests, how much water(as exactly as possible) to add to the bottle cap full of salt?

Daiso also have. Daiso also have. $2 nia. Comes with a built in thermometer as well. I bought one for my fridge

Check out the video in the link I shared above, (from around 1:20 mark) you can tell how much water to add judging by the consistency of the mix. I'd describe it like wet sand. It's not so wet that you can see the water, but wet enough that it all clumps together.

Noted kandinsky. I watched the video and a couple of others as well. Just wondering if there is an exact amount.

After about 8 hours in the dry cabinet, both the digital meter on my cabinet and the cheap analog one are showing the exact same readings.

Here is the packaging of the cheap $8 hygrometer.

Salt test to be done later tonight to see the accuracy of the analog one.

yes agree...water level "just nice".

Just stumbled across this thread, the difference between my cheap meter and my Dropbox us 15! Looks like I have to do the test soon

camera not made of tofu...

Apologies to dig up an old thread...

Can someone point me to where I can buy a reliable (meaning doesn't break easily it often) hygrometer? It has to be adjustable because I need to calibrate the hygrometer.

I am currently using a Western Humidor analog one which i suspect is faulty. Need to have it replaced.

Thanks in advance for advice

Hi there!

I was hunting for a reliable one for quite awhile already and just got mine 2 weeks ago upon a recommendation from a friend! Very reliable and the seller is super friendly and nice. Try contacting them on their website (cameraccessorize.com)!

I bought quite a number of mini hygrometers off Qoo10 a couple years back. They are all pretty accurate (from salt test). Cost me 5 bucks each.

Hi guys, at Daiso which outlet did you guys go, and which section is it under? I tried searching but can't find any hygrometer. Sorry for digging up the thread!
