Has anybody heard of someone actually winning this? Or is it just a gimmick to make you subscribe to Reader's Digest? :dunno:

I have been "the lucky ones" to be selected almost every year, including this year.

Well, I have not win anything, and also nothing to lose.

I'm one of the 'lucky ones' also. But I've never subscribed to RD before, only a current NatGeo subscriber.
So did it make you a subscriber to RD?

Me and my brother received them for abt. 3 years. The entry forms and car "keys" looked very real. I submitted without subsciribing :). All these are just maketing gimmics. Subscribe it, if you really want to read, not for the contest. However, RD still one of my favorite megazine, and IMO one of the best.

I'm also one of the "lucky" ones..........not the first time though. I don't buy it ......... waste of time. :blah:

lolx. got the "car key" too. $150k? no way man.... :bsmilie:

just got 'conned', i nver subscribed to RD b4, only my mom did when i was young, around 8-15 yrs ago.

Received some sweeptakes blah blah few months back, submitted to the YES envolope to enter the sweepstakes. Found the RD in my letter box one day, and the bill!! They also sent a book with 4 stories inside, and the BILL for that! WTF, I did nothing, then another issue of RD came, asking for the bill again.

THen some warning letter came, I have to do some action. Called n emailed them. Reaslied in the YES envelope to enter the sweepstakes, there's fineprint to 'i wld like to receive RD magazine'. *&^%$ man. Had to go to their office to return everything. and nothing to do with them no more.

I used to love RD, read every single article when I was young, as my mom, like most parents, would want their children to read more to improve on our english. I've seemed to grow out of it. The stories ain't that impactful as before.

I'd almost think that the sweepstakes is some sort of scam to make one sign up.

BEWARE!

I was one of the 'lucky' ones too. But the whole process of participating is long and time consuming. Attach this and that, keep this and that, scratch this and that. Moreover, you need to reply to the YES envelope inorder to win, and replying a YES means extending your subscription.

it would be easy for them to have a database of all those who tried to take part in some related draw or something, then remove those current subscribers, and then send out the mail to all these people. the subscriptions for long term, would offset the loss due to mailing etc.

has anyone ever seen photos of the actual sweepstakes winner? :dunno:

i guess to a certain extent it is real as i've known a friend who won $8k from RD

agree. It can't be the fact that I grew out of it alone, I'm very sure the articles back in eighties had much more substance to them. Nowadays, everything in media has become mundane and boring with a rather restricted subset of subjects to draw from. Cancer, weight loss, diets, exams, internet, all the usual whines of a cocooned society.

Yeah... i've am the "lucky" ones to have been selected for the past 3 years... everyone probably gets those.

Sure, someone will win the money, but don't count on it.

It's more of a marketing ploy to get you to buy more of their products.

They will make it attractive for you to buy their products by promising some kind of "extra cash reward" if you win and "extra chances" at the sweepstakes. They also send pseudo-personalised letters, saying smth like you are among the lucky few, it's a rare opportunity... they would also list you as a favoured customer so that puts pressure on you to maintain your status by buying... and then they will play it up by getting you to select your preferred method of payment like as if if you have already won.

It happens everytime.

I just ignore those mail now, every few weeks, i clear like a thick pile of unopened RD envelops.

Frankly speaking, i suscribe to RD for the magazine, and i hope that they stop sending this BS, it's ruining their reputation!

Why not just buy RD from news stands/petrol stations? then u won't have to deal with RD sending you envelops or sweeptakes that u don't want to take part!

Yes, my family has ever received a set of books from them before; even though we did not subscribe to RD nor did we take part in their sweepstakes draw.

Needless to day, we were not happy with RD's hardsell tactics, forcing you to buy their books.

Rather than pay for the return postage for no rhyme nor reason, we ended up bringing the whole package to the nearest postoffice and telling them to "return to sender."
