Another Victim at Sim Lim Square

Not the 1st time.... won't be the last time...

That's why I never shop there given the choice.

SLS is one of the promoted shopping paradises for electronics by STB. The shops prefer more tourists than locals.

Paying $1k in coins legal? CASE not doing anything about the challenge? This is very bad image not just for the SLS but also reflect badly of Singapore.

case gives me the impression they are only reactive, not proactive

Somebody mentioned that we have paper general. So what's new that we have a paper organisation.

first of all, no one expected that they would pull the prank a la the fake news that Samsung paid the fine to Apple in truckloads of $1 coins.

secondly, it takes time to investigate and find out what they can slap the store with. as some have analyzed on other sources, $1000 in coins is still considered legal tender.

it may be a very scumbag move on the retailer's part, but if it's still legally binding, there is almost nothing CASE can do.

and lastly, it's always Buyer Beware. if laws come out to ensure that people are not forced to buy "insurance" or "warranty" after buying a product, it will be a whole new headache for businesses that offer extended warranty or product insurance plans

I wonder if one can pay your utilities bill to PUB in 10 cents coins? Of course we need to see what next. 1 week to react?

this is really low down and down right childish. Very embarrassed myself to hear about this being practiced by a local retailer in sg.

Seems like the $2000 surcharge was for the iPhone's insurance.

Quite nice food for thought: 'If i really paid the $2000 insurance for a $1000 dollar phone and I lost mine later, will this same shop honor the insurance? :bsmilie: ?'

I have noticed SLS management had put up the names of the black listed shops at the ground floor lift landing. However these cut throat shops are very smart, they only display merchandise logos or brand names of the product at their shops and not even the shop address number.

I remember, not long ago some smart a** taxi driver had a notice in his car that was to prevent customers to pay their fare all in coins. He referred to a chapter of the Singapore Law (some MAS act). This funky show jumps from breaking one law to the next ...

Tourist traps. Locals will usually avoid the shops at 1st/2nd storeys.

Nowadays nothing much to shop there. Funan will be a better choice.

Don't says so early. Some shops on top also dangerous type. Unless you know the person there else got chop also high chance. Like they says that model better etc but not true. They want to sell off that batch or having more profit from that items only. So, do your homework before heading to sls.

This is nothing new. A lot of shops at SLS are controlled or owned by a syndicate. If the name shop is tarnished / blacklisted due to whatever reasons, all you need to do is to close down the shop, and then set up a new name for a new shop. It is very cheap to set up a company. On the other hand, if a salesman is blacklisted, etc. All you need to do is to announce that he is fired from this shop. At the next moment, you will see him appearing in another shop.

Legally speaking, there is nothing CASE or STB or police, etc can do about it since these shops do not commit any criminal offences such as money laundering, criminal intimation, causing physical hurt to customers, etc.

Look at this particular case when the customer was quarreling with the salesman, police was called in but what did the police do? They asked them to settle among themselves because it is a civil case.
