Saw this in canonrumor, the G7X... looked interesting.

But from the photo... it seemed like this camera lacked something which I think is quite important (for me anyway)... no viewfinder and no hotshoe for additional accessories... the Sony RX100III had a viewfinder, the Fujifilm X30 has an excellent viewfinder, and I think the upcoming LX8 or LX100 had provision for a viewfinder, the X30 and I believe the LX100 has hotshoe for other accessories, the RX100II had hotshoe for accessories...

Why couldn't Canon just look at the market and come up with an otherwise excellent product?

Actually, I'll be interested in it as it is :p

Provided that the price point is right. And the af speed to be comparable to Sony or omd.

But the added functionality of hotshoe and viewfinder may not be that useful for those casual shooters (but want bigger sensor than s100 series) because an added flash will be quite heavy...and viewfinder is not everyone's cup of tea.

That said, I'm still looking forward if there any drastic improvement to the m series.

Because Canon is up to their usual mischief: handicapping their lower end products in order to achieve product differentiation. If the G7X uses the Sony RX100 M3 sensor, then it'll clearly be superior to the G1X M1/2, so they have to handicap the G7X. :)

If the G7X comes with a S$800 price tag, then I feel it is reasonable. Otherwise, they have just shot themselves in the foot again... oh well, they never seem to tire of that anyway.

canon is such a let down.

Seems like every manufacturer is getting a piece of the sony 1" 20mp sensor. ;p

Contrary to what some may think, I think we have a winner here!!! This camera is definitely what I have been patiently waiting for several years!

I guess as humans, we can never be easily satisfied. I don't think Canon is disappointing. Naturally, they have to consider all their other cameras in the market. They'd be silly to produce a camera with features that will kill the sales of their other models.

If one wants good image quality with large sensor in a "compact", there's always the G1XII. Though for me, I don't find the weight and size to be "compact" that will motivate me to use it as one.

If you want something smaller but larger sensor than normal compact, there's the Sony RX100III. There's a nice viewfinder. But are you willing to fork out more than $1000 for it? I won't.

Anyway, I don't quite appreciate the use of a viewfinder in a camera so small. Can imagine it to be a bit of an awkward handling. It's nice to have perhaps for those bright areas outdoors, but hey, it's a compact, not for something absolutely serious. It's not that bad also without a viewfinder. For $1000+ to include the viewfinder, like the Sony RX10III, sorry I'll pass that.

I believe this so-called G7X is for those who want slightly better quality than the S series but still retain the design of the S-series! And just look at the better max aperture range! Seriously, what's there not to be happy about? I think it's only the price we are awaiting now.

And I don't want any hotshoe! Why do I want to carry a compact and an external flash? I want it light, on-the-go but with good image quality. If I am so anal about using lighting from external flash, there's the G16 and G1XII anyway.

My humble guess is, this cam will be priced $600-700. (Since S series is about $400+, and G1XII is $800+) If really so, that's great! So I think Canon got it right in this new cam. No point fighting with other camera brands by producing almost similar specs but then the price is also close to one another.

Let's wait for the specs... My only worry is.... my pocket! :)

If Canon sells the G7X at the price u deduced, I shall get one the day it is launched. :bsmilie:

Interested only if its below the price of $800 (which I doubt)....

I'm not sure exactly where this model positioning will be. Is it a S Series replacement or a new range placed between the A and G16 series? My gut feel is the latter and most likely it's selling price should not be higher than G16.

If it had a Hotshot I'd be pissed cos it'll just be a wasted space on such small camera. It's a little disappointment that it doesn't have a pop up viewfinder like the RX100III but it's not a top big deal for me. Instead the additional zoom of 30mm further and still maintaining f2.8 is a better deal given a choice.

I'd say this G7X is gonna give RX100III a run if the price is going to be at least $300 lower. The Sony is just too expensive.

Yes, agreed with many that the strategy here was for Canon to sell it cheaper (significantly) against Sony, since both are using 1" sensor, as to which company manufacture the sensor doesn't really matter to most consumer.

The main reason is... if that camera sold at a premium pricing (more than S$800 to $1k+), many would rather buy the Sony or the upcoming LX100 which in a sense is more appealing and giving more (although many would not use those things but it was there). Secondly, unless Canon can differentiate her product against the rest of the 1" sensor products out in the market (by giving better IQ, low light hanndling, wider dynamic range and the such), I really don't see a future for this product if it is selling at too high a price.

Finally, Canon already had the G1XmkII which had a bigger sensor and basically almost everything in it, I really don't see why they are coming up with another sensor camera. All along I am thinking that they will introduce a smaller compact using the same 1.5" sensor in line with the S-class camera, calling it maybe the S1X camera... But looks like I am wrong again. I really isn't into marketing, yeah?

And... pardon my very bad eyes, don't you find the G7X looked a little like the RX100?

If it is the really the size of the S series. I think it is a winner. But likely bigger than the S series. Hope not by much.

It does look like size of S Series but probably a little thicker? The RX100III ain't exactly slim bean itself.

I think it will be about the same size of the RX100... maybe a bit taller because of the big protruding dials. if the photo is real, then it will not have viewfinder and hotshoe, not sure if it will have any tilty-flippy screen. It will definitely not be the size of the S-class camera, will be bigger and most definitely fatter, but that is okay for many people (me included). It has a much bigger sensor than the S-class camera.

What I am hoping actually was that Canon put her 1.5" sensor into a bigger S-class camera, basically like the S120 to the G16 camera. I think that would set Canon's camera apart from the rest of the competition. But looked like Canon is bowing to the popular 1" sensor format.

What I am interested now is to see what will become of the 1.5" sensor format in future. Will it go down the same route as the APS-H sensor?

Also... the biggest question is...

What is the pricing of the G7X? The G1Xii is around 1.2K (If I remember correctly). Canon is hardpress to introduce a price to the G7X, if it is significantly lower than the G1XII, then wouldn't that actually killed the G1X sales? If it differs slightly from the G1Xii, wouldn't alot of people go for the RX100III (Which cost quite close to the G1XII) since the G7X looked and I would expect to perform similarly to the RX100III, while lacking some of the function like the viewfinder of the RX100III and for people who like the handling and look of the G1Xii, they will not buy the G7X if they cost about the same and that would definitely kill the sales of the new G7X.

So... where will the G7X stands? Pretty awkward if you ask me.

I think let's wait for the review and price. Sometimes, when we over-analyze and reason out too much why camera A is better than camera B, or why Canon has its marketing wrong, it kills the joy of photography. I constantly have to remind myself photography is meant to have fun with. I think we are all very lucky the technology is there. If we don't like Canon, there is always Sony or Panasonic to consider.

I read other forums and don't understand why people are trashing Canon and kept saying for eg, Sony has a viewfinder, why can't Canon have it? I think that's really silly. These people basically want to whine and expect Canon to follow exactly what the competitors already have. If they like Sony so much, why don't they just get it? Obviously, it's the price they are unhappy about. So do they expect Canon to be so kind to follow Sony's specs and sell the cam like a few hundred $ cheaper? Fat hope!

Sometimes, it's more than just pure specs that attract me to a camera. I remember some time back, I was considering between Canon S-series and the much talked about Sony RX100II. Reviews claimed the Sony is compact and can take better quality images than Canon. I thought it was a no brainer to get the Sony, except for the higher price to consider, of course.

After holding the RX100II for less than 10 minutes and playing with the features, I immediately knew the camera didn't suit me. I ended without any doubt on the Canon. It wasn't so much the cost. I was willing to pay more. But I just didn't like it. The handling especially. They may claim the Sony is close to that of the Canon. But I disagree. The S series is noticeably more compact to me. For cheaper price, and image quality that I don't think is a lot worse than Sony's, I bought the Canon and took a lot of great images with it.

As they say, it's not the camera but the person behind it. Ok let's wait patiently and hope the price and features of this new little Canon cam will satisfy most of us here! :)

Yah and if Canon were to make something exactly as the RX100III, these fellas will say Canon no innovation and just copycat.... Never ending story and cannot please these whiners one.

I think at this point most Canon users will be grateful if they come up with something exactly like RXIII.. :p been living in the cave for too long.

Oh, and cheaper price tag is always welcomed.. Dun care if it's copycat-ing :)

Well... everyone had their own expectation and wishes. If no one really talk about Canon, it can be that no one is interested anymore, and so it is not right to term others who voiced their opinion as silly or what. And like what many said, it all boils down ultimately in pricing of the camera. Sure, people will buy if the price is lower than S$800 (myself included) and I can find reason for the camera didn't has a viewfinder or a hotshoe. However if the price is close to what Sony is selling the RX100III, then, many will simply get the Sony because the Sony did offer more than what Canon has offer, simple as that. And it is rather silly to say that if the person doesn't like Canon, he/she can buy Sony or Panasonic. Well, of course if he/she doesn't like Canon, he/she can buy from other brands. However, if that person actually like Canon and wishes for something that Canon is not giving as of yet, it is not wrong. And it is also perfectly alright for them to start hoping for what Sony and Panasonic is actually giving in their camera that has been out in the market (well, Sony only), because we do have a comparison.

if anyone who is a diehard fan of Canon (not saying that is wrong), he/she can dismiss what other is saying and go to get yourself a Canon which is a perfectly fine camera too.

To most people... everything boils down to price and how much Canon is going to sell their G7X. And unlike some people... people like me, like to think of the marketing strategy of Canon, because I find it fun to do it and like to see how they are going to place this product... it is inline with what I am doing in my work, and I find nothing wrong with that too... plus it is always fun for people like myself, to look at current and announced products of a company to see if we can predict what a company is actually going to do in future.
