Digital Camera

Hi all!

Hoping to get some advice from all the photograph enthusiasts here! I want to get a new digital camera for my travels, but with so many models in the market these days I'm not sure which to get. I don't really have much preference, other than one with wi-fi capabilities so that I can send to my phone to post on social networks and hopefully below $500. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Was interested in the Samsung NX Mini but I didn't like how the lens are not retractable (ie more prone to scratches) and although I read that the reviews were good, but I heard it does not do well in low-light situations.

Firstly , there's no need to post the same thing in the newbies and general forums, most forum readers help out at both sides.

Hmm , you said wifi is a more important function and with a budget of $500, I really suggest you top up a bit & consider the Olympus EM10. Spec and function wise it should be more than enough for your needs. For me buying a camera one should buy once buy right and buy one that's future proofed a bit.

If it's really a tight $500, u can also consider a cheaper body that supports eye-fi or FlashAir cards and use that to transfer photos too for which there's really many different modes.

Let the other guys here tell u what other models u can consider too.

If you doesnt need a tilted LCD.. Canon S120 is a good travel cam. Small and light.

First think about whether u need a system camera and what is the quality of photos u would like to achieve. And also you decide how big or small you want your camera and lens to be. Budget wise is quite subjective as you can always invest and work towards your goal.

At the moment I think Sony RX100 III, Olympus Stylus 1 and the upcoming Panasonic LX1000 (or might be LX100) may be suitable if you are looking for a compact camera.

For a system camera, there will be many factors to look into n will become another topic when you have decided to own one.

You might want to consider iPhone 6 Plus for travel photos & videos. It should be within your budget if you buy it with a 2-year contract from a local telco, available from 19Sep. Full info in the keynote address on apple website.

It shouldn't be if you keep the camera relatively warm when not in use. In winter condition & below zero deg C, I normally keep it in its case and inside a bag, taking it out to shoot & restore to keep warm. Also, have a spare battery or two, wrapped up, and ready for use if the one in the camera malfunctions in the cold.

PS: Ref my earlier post, the iPhone 6 or 6+ is way above the $500 range as announced. I would still use mine as a secondary still photo or video camera during my travels for fast uploads of selected photos to FB on the go to share with family & close friends at home

hi, the advice has been shared quite a few times here and I managed to get them tried and tested in sub zero temperatures too

1. Get a ziplock bag. When entering a warmer room from outside, place camera within ziplock first and only remove from bag after 5-10 mins in the warmer environment. This is to minimise condensation and it will save your camera.

2. Batteries. Get spares. Keep them warm.

3. Any cameras will always have a lowest operating temperature where u will be able to find in its spec sheet. Take a bit of time and read this so u feel more assured.

Sony, Canon, Nikon .. all are Japanese companies. I guess the engineers will know what Winter means and they might understand that people want to take pictures in Winter time Worry less, shoot more.
Korea has Winter periods as well.

Casio ZR1500, if you don't mind a smaller sensor. You'll get a useful 24-300mm focal length for travel and lots of shooting modes built in, including the famous selfie makeup mode. Long battery life of 470 shots per charge (for a compact camera) which is useful in cold weather.
