You have interviewed for a job and are waiting anxiously for their decision on whether you are suitable for this job. However, the employer says "we are considering hiring from within and hence the job is now on hold". This has happened to me quite a few times already. Sometimes, it is employment agent who has sent me for the interview other times it is direct. Why does this keep happening? This is a waste of everybody's time.

1) Would you make a complaint to MOM?
2) Has anyone experienced this before?

Let me hear from you.

:(

Sure have lah. Very common one.
Often you think you might be selected for the job but at the end you're not.

Nothing much you can do other then keep sending CVs and go for more interviews.

it means you are NOT suitable for the job. they don't want to hurt your feeling and hence give some excuses why they are not hiring you.

sorry, sad but true.

If the HR hiring policy states 'internal candidates first' then why are they checking the open market? This should be done only after internal hiring is unsuccessful. Sounds like a benchmark exercise to test the waters.

The company may concurrently recruit from external and internal. Nothing wrong with that.

Is quite common among the local firms to say politely that you been rejected for the position. Sorry but this trend keep going on from years.

And this could be due to two reasons,
1. They might really found an internal candidate, many companies do give priority to their internal staff than outsiders.
2. They might found another candidate for less pay with reasonable budget.

Well... at least they tell you the reason of why they are not hiring you. In many of my case in the past, they don't even bother telling you. They just keep quiet and you will know that they are no longer interested after a couple of months.

Save your emotional energy.

Move on, or start your own business la.

If you believe/think that you have the avenue to complain to some authority who will take care of your grieviences......

Deal with it and move on.....

I don't think businesses will set up interviews just to waste time. It's likely that they were unable to find a suitable candidate for the job through the interviews. Or it could be just a nice way of telling you that you did not get the job.

What does it keep happening? The simple answer is they found their ideal candidate and it was someone else. But it really could be anything else, e.g., maybe budget was suddenly cut so there's a freeze on new headcount, etc. They could also have HR policies in place that require them to interview/consider a certain number of external applicants for each opening, even if they are considering internal applicants. Makes sense to open it up as they don't really know how many applicants they'll get until it's posted up anyway.

Whatever you think the 'real' reason may be, while it may be really frustrating on the receiving end, unless they've made you any promises/guarantees, or discriminated against you in any way, they're not obligated to hire you after an interview. What would your complaint would be based on anyway? Accuse these employers of lying? How would you prove that?

In my case, the company is expanding and is opening a new office nearby. In fact, the manager (the man who interviewed me) for this new office only started 2 weeks ago. The HR person was so busy that day so she wasn't present at the interview. Hence the manager said that there might be a 2nd interview with her. After that, the agent told me that were considering hiring from within and the job was put on hold.

Since the agent reply & say that the job is on hold. There is nothing much you can do, complain or challenge their decision.

The employer don't own you or promises you a job after the interview. Even if they ever make any hinting or promises during interview , they still can change their mind.

At this juncture, it is still Employer's market despite the gahment encouraged all employers hiring locals.

Don't feel bad. Although you sound very much wanted that job. But if you can't get it, be with in and move on to look for another job.

I still think that if you are still young and possessed reasonable qualification you should have no problem finding job.

Do remember there are many candidates for each opening. Although not necessarily the best will get the job, many will be rejected if these is only 1 vacancy.

There are also many ways to reject someone, I always believe it is a basic courtesy to reply even if the candidate is not successful. I also make a point to conduct a full interview even we have secured a right candidate in an earlier interview. After all they took the trouble to come for the interview. If possible also provide some feedback.

If you are always being rejected. You need to reflect on what are the possible reasons. Never let one failure stop you from trying again. Work on your shortfalls and you will make it someday. Many candidates lack self confident, speak up during interviews.

Dancemania, I understand your disappointment and frustration. When you hear it once or twice, ok, you give them the benefit of the doubt. Anything more, you begin to wonder, what the heck?
I don’t think Dancemania is complaining. Cos many of us are not in his shoes. We all have jobs. Those who put smiley faces when commenting, probably you are very stable financially. Maybe even retired with good income flowing in.
Unfortunately, when one voices one’s grievances on a public forum like that, the common response is a lashing out on the poster himself.

Sure, no one owes the interviewee a job. But I don’t think it’s wrong to question the kind of reply Dancemania is getting. Better for companies to just say, “Sorry, we regret to inform you that….” or simply don’t reply to signify the interviewee isn’t successful.

I give analogies then you all can feel and think better. Imagine you try to buy an item. Seller agrees to price and both of you even arrange to meet up. Then last minute seller says to you: “I am considering a buyer with a higher price unless you offer me something higher.” Happens once to you, ok. Twice, a bit disappointed. Anything more, you know something is questionable about the practice and culture. We can also argue, the seller has full rights to reject the sale at the last minute. He owes you no answer or apology. But from buyer’s point of view, how do you feel?
Or those of you who are full-time photographers. When you see ads asking for free photography. Or company says they have low budget and only pays $200 for a few days’ commercial job. How do you feel? You kao peh in the forum. But do these companies owe you a living? No. Then why complain? If you are not interested in the job, they have hundreds others who can do the job without you.

So I think empathy is important here.

Dancemania, the reality here is, you have to keep trying. I suspect it’s a practice here for companies to test water. And once they learn of the “trick”, they will use the lame line to let you know they have other plans. It’s a cheapo excuse to use, but you have no choice. IMHO, HR of the company doesn’t need to give you any reason to reject you. It only makes them look bad because of their poor planning. If they really need to source internally, they should not have put up the job ad in the first place.

Life here is very competitive now. No easy life. I’m not sure what work you are seeking but generally, you are competing not with just the citizens here but lots of foreigners and PRs as well. Cost of living is just too high. Companies try to cut cost and try to employ people giving them the least pay if possible.

Good luck in your job search!
