[need help] AFS28-70/2.8D dead SWM replace cost

hi Bros,

My 2870's SWM finally gone after some squeaking noise appeared recently, anyone know how much will it cost to have a replacement at Nikon Service Centre? I am just wondering if it's worth to replace.

hey, it is more accurate for you to bring down to ask for a quote. I tried before, they wouldn't tell you over the phone or the most give you a rough guide.

If is changing parts (ie zoom rubber, lens cap and etc), they will tell you over the phone.

For non-NPS, a ballpark figure for changing the SWM motor plus labour would be at least S$450-500 and up.

For the exact cause of failure and costs of replacement, bring down to Nikon Service Centre for a check.

There are a few symptoms of AF problem.
1. The SWM turns but couldn't focus lock
2. The SWM turns but stops at certain distance
3. The SWM doesn't turn at all

For item 1, it may not be the motor, usually its; the part called GMR. The part doesn't cost much
For item 2, I have seen a lot of this problem and it's always caused by a loose flex cable. To confirm, try to manual focus and see if it stops at the same distance ( don't force to turn if it stops)
For item 3, it could be faulty SWM

Hi Fatigue, i think mine is the 3rd issue....totally no work at all.

Will eventually happen to all lenses with SWM after a long time..... nothing is made to last forever anymore sadly.

It's normally in the ballpark of $500 or so. Maybe not the older lenses.
