How do you carry along the 70-200 f/2.8 len?

I have finally decided to bite the bullet and buy the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 lens.

How do you guys carry along the lens, since it is big and bulky? I have a backpack but it is not big enough to carry a camera body and the lens.

Would you attach onto the camera and carry with the strap and tripod foot only? What about the rain, though it is weather proof? Or you detach from the camera body and carry with its lens pouch?

70-200 2.8 is not big and bulky bro... its normal. The big and bulky ones are those 500mm stuff or 300mm 2.8 stuff.

Well, congratulations on your purchase. Get a bigger bag as recommended by DD123. There are many choices, Lowepro, Think Tank, Tamrac & etc. Backpack, shoulder bag, holster bags are the few styles of camera bag. Find one that will fit your current gear for a photo shot. Load up all your stuff & check out the strap padding on your shoulders. It must feel comfortable.

Find the bag that will fit your camera mounted with the 70-200mm plus 2-3 lenses & a flash. Backpack are good for travel & walkabouts, leaves your hands free for shooting but you will need to stop to remove the bag to store the camera or take out stuff. Shoulder bag is easier to access & store the camera but tires out the shoulder if you have a heavy load. Holster bags are like large lens bag, they attach to your belt, easy to access and store but cant carry much gear.

If you are using a camera with plastic front plate I will not recommend you to carry the 70-200mm mounted on the body with the body straps. I know it is a chore to carry the 70-200mm over a long period of time with your left hand. You may prefer a sling type belt like the Black Rapid or Carry speed or you may prefer the ball & socket belt holster.

For my mid sized stuff I use a sling belt & mount it on the lens tripod. The cam & lens is on my left or right side. I may use a shoulder bag or backpack. I can walk for many hours comfortably in this set up.

If you shoot long enough, one bag may not be enough. I have a few, a small, mid & a large bag.

Like what many had suggested, time to bite the bullet and upgrade your backpack too.

Also... I would not really worried too much about rain. Your lens is not going to rust by a bit of rain. Worried more for yourself, not to get sick in rainy season

(And btw... most camera bag these days have some degree of weather proof too.)

im using a crumpler bag similar to 7MDH. can fit in my 70-200 and camera tgt. i nv like hving strap. sometime i use carryspeed strap, that's all...

Thanks for all your suggestions of getting a bigger backpack. I would have to bring along the camera and lens to see if it suits my need and comfy.

I'm using the D600. I have the camdapter sling strap that can attach on the lens and carry it during the photo shoot. But will need to get a bigger bag to keep all the gears.

I think many of us have more than 1 bags/pouch etc. Different sizes for different purpose/occasion.

U might want consider lowepro flipside aw series .. very light and strong material, and yes the smallest 10l size can fit a 24-70 and 70-200 in

Domke F802 and Think Tank Retrospective 20 worked well for me. Both were roomy enough to fit either 1) lens + camera vertically with hood backwards, or 2) the detached lens on one side and my camera + 50mm the other side.

if your bag can't store both the lens and camera even when dismount,then its better to get another bigger bag.

Haha both of you already in the pro arena, of course I compare to the normal zoom and standard lens, the 70-200 is the big bro for me.
The others 300 and beyond is another different league. Lucky I'm still not into birdies yet.

Are you referring to the Up-Rise 45? I'm pretty sure it can fit a 5D body + 24-70 (attached) and 70-200 f2.8 (unattached) and a flash.

No, it is the Vanguard Adapter 45. It is side entry. Even for my D600 attached with 24-70 f2.8 is slightly small. It bulges the sides after closing. The Up-rise could be much bigger.

I bought it previously as my lens was not too big, and I do not need to take the bag off my shoulder to retrieve or keep the camera. It is actually on the go.

I suggest u drop by Penisular plaza with your gear, theres all the bag you can try out before you decide which is suitable. And yes, on you way down, see if you can endure the weight of all ur equipment.

Btw I never bring 2470 70200 out together, only one of them for a trip, its too heavy for me even if I am using the veri light and small flipeside 10l.
