Need advice on shop to buy D5300 from

Hi guys. This is my very first post, so go easy on me if I ask the obvious. I'm planning to get my first dslr, and after a lot of thought, have decided to go for the D5300.

Walked around in Funan today, and was quoted the following prices :

1. John 3:16 - $950 with bag, memory card
2. SLR Revolution - $940 with bag, memory card, cleaning kit, $15 shop voucher
3. Email quote from cathay photo - $925 with bag, memory card, card reader (not inclusive of gst)
4. Challenger member sale - $1139 with bag and memory card ( guess this option is out)

All come with the 18-55 kit lens.

Which shop should I get it from, in terms of service, and any other things I should look out for , in terms of the warranty,any hidden caveats, etc? As it's my first time buying a dslr, I don't want to get misled. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Edit: Just realized that 1 and 2 are not in the Nikon authorized dealer list. Is that a concern?

Not much different on 1st and 2nd store, if you consider your time and efforts to make a few more trips, $50 cheaper is not a saving unless you are still a student.

At an initial glance, just by price alone, it should direct anyone who wants to buy the D5300 to go to SLR-R

However, I would go to Samuel / Steven of John 3:16 and pay that additional 10 bucks more because of the very good after sales service. It is not that as if its paying for premium service but at John 3:16, the "Supplier - Customer" relationship goes a long way and the price difference will be "worth it".

I personally feel its worth it as had many returning patrons who went there knowing their price is higher.

However, it is also common for patrons to walk in and decide to buy from another store because of the 10 bucks difference.

So, its your choice.

As far as I know, the sets from the shops you listed are Nikon Singapore Warranty sets.

When you are there to make your purchase, you can ask to check the warranty card and compare the serial number of the card to the D5300. The serial number can be found at the bottom of the camera.

Recently when I asked for quotation at Cathay, some of the price given on phone or shop visits were lower than email quote. Email quote without gst, phone/shop visit the price included everything. Sometimes it can be among the lowest.
Plus any payment, no credit surcharge.

I might be different from others. When I decide to buy something, I want it fast and good price. Waiting in line for almost forever when the sales-guys sweet talk to each customer is not my idea of good service. I am no longer someone new to photography that needs the assurance and guidance when buying gear. I know what I want. I just want to go in, get what I want, check it on the spot, pay, and be on my way. So don't go bro here bro there... And one thing I totally cannot stand is seeing how some stores/salesmen let their customers molest every piece of new gear without limitation, then put it back and sell it to the next customer.

Bro here bro there only work for newbie .. or certain equipment they r selling.

Try using this on ppl who buy 300mm 400mm 600mm prime .. confirm no deal.

J316 takes their Nikon stock from another store (on level 2). That is usually why their pricing is a little higher.

SLRR is one company under a large group of companies (with around 11-13 camera stores). The main company in that group is the authorized dealer, so no problem also.

In Singapore, as long as the goods are distributed by Nikon Singapore, and sold by a store in Singapore, warranty will be the same. This is because many stores share stock and sell stock to each other.

I can imagine all the user marks on the lenses, bodies, and lens mount. Not forgetting the burning of shutter counts.

Don't think I'll want a so-used set.

Tried to test at TK Foto the other day for the 16-35, was rejected, citing that testing is only allowed if there's the intention to purchase, else the unit will be too used to be sold after multiple tries. Fair enough, I was going to buy anyway, so I just informed them.

Not many shops these days prohibit testing and allow customers to molest their stock all over. Well used sets can always find the mount full of use marks and/or dirt/scratches.

Like what Catchlights says, we know, we go in, we buy and leave. You try going back to the shops within 7 days everyday ask about the lens performance, is it normal, etc etc and see if there are any after-sales service.
