Newbie at a loss, pls help

Guys,
I am a true newbie here. Thinking of getting a good cam to bring for my holidays and maybe use for my leisure times too. Mainly shooting landscape, buildings, ppl on the street.. U know what tourist snap. So I narrow my search to sony nex-5t or samsung nx300m. Pls comment and help me decide which is the one I need. I think it boils down to ease of use, right?

Precisely it boils down to ease of use we won't be of much help. You probably could do some research on user reviews for these two models. At the end of the day, only urself can tell which suits your handling better. Nevertheless between the two, I'll go for the Sony camera. I never felt Samsung made good cameras yet...

For tourist snaps, I would go for a small point and shoot. Something like the Sony RX100

I would go for the new Canon G1X mk II. It is said to have improved AF and a much better sensor + processor... it costed close to the RX100mkII and frankly speaking, I find it small enough and light enough for everything it do. It also provide a good focal range coverage.

Other than that... if I was to take candids shots without much planning... I would fall back on my Nokia 1520... it take better pics than most compact point and shoot with tiny sensor out there. And it is always with me.

It appears to me that based on the genres you stated, u will be mostly shooting moderate wide angle.

If you think you will be ok with just 28mm equivalent focal length (that's usually the widest of the zoom range found on most compact cameras and DSLR kit lenses), I would suggest the Ricoh GR. Other than the fixed focal length limitation, it's a better camera in terms of image quality as well as portability and price compared to those already listed. Do google it if you have not come across this camera before.

But between the two listed, sony > samsung

Hi, i would suggest a compact as to what others are mentioning as well.. e.g. Sony RX100,RX100-II, Ricoh GR , Nikon coolpix A, Ricoh GRD 4.

as they are small, fast and compact..

The 2 systems Sony/Samsung you have mentioned, are good. but may not perform in low light as good as a fixed focal length camera like ricoh GR (compared with their kit lenses).
Both Sony/Samsung, i would choose sony ,cos it can support other 3rd party lenses with an adaptor if needed. but their lens choices are also somewhat limited compared to m4/3 ones.. Sony seems to have the problem of churning out cameras at a higher rate than what they are doing with their lenses...

Samsung has decent image quality, however their lens lines are also somewhat limited..

If you really insist in buying mirrorless cameras, i would suggest a m4/3 range, some camera like oly em10,em5,em1. panasonic GX7 etc.. just take your pick, depending on your budget.

My Nokia 1520 can do that too. So can the 6D, Olympus EP-5, Panasonic TZ40, NEX-5T, NEX-6, etc etc.

I am no expert but if it is P&S without interchangeable lens, I see lots of good phone camera around that can do just as good. Of course if you want something you could see on a bigger screen, then it is another story. my 2-cent

Not if you want a larger sensor and RAW capability.

Agree. Before I had my DSLR, I don't know what is raw. All I want is just a decent picture. Then you want to upgrade next. That is life. haha

Show me any phone camera where I can set the JPG compression level. For some, the compression artifacts can be seen already on camera screen and there is nothing one can do about it.

Of course the phone cameras are not designed to match actual camera, even the P&S type at the moment. What I gather from TS is that he want a reasonable camera that can take 'nice' pictures. I am not sure he is into raw, compression, etc. otherwise, I assume he would ask which DSLR model. Between the off the shelves compact camera and today's phone camera, some are already quite close for leisure shoot.

In my view, if you want better quality picture, you can't use the compact digital camera.

You were lost... Now, after you got throught this thread, with so many suggestions, I'm dead sure you will be completely and totally lost.

I highly recommend the Canon Powershot S110 or S120. So compact you can put in a shirt pocket or small purse. Can just point & shoot with superb image quality! Very easy to operate & advanced enough for manual overrides & controls. Ideal for travel & all.

Yeah agree.

Another good is Olympus XZ series.

Enough for tourist use.

Simi raw, simi compression? Some ppl just want to snap pics and forget it

Actually, either choice of NEX or Samsung with kit lens should do well enough for a start.

Sony RX100 mkII gets my vote... If can live without zoom then Ricoh GR... If need interchangeable lenses, Nikon V1.

I will go for Canon G1XmkII, although pretty high cost at the moment. Or the Nokia 1020 or Nokia 1520. And in my opinion the Nokia take great pics, comparable or even surpassing many P&S.
