Hi

I'm looking for a good point and shoot camera (Budget $500-600) for my upcoming grad trip. Really looking at those pocketable cameras and not DSLR or those bulky cameras...

Have read a lot of rave reviews on RX100 (both mk 1 and 2) but can't afford them unless I buy 2nd hand ones with few months of warranty remaining.

Have eventually began to look around at others, like Canon S120 and G16.

I'm hoping that with this camera I can at least begin to explore manual settings and not just stick to AUTO all the time.

Thank you.

What is wrong with 2nd hand and some months warranty left?

Depend on size of ur pocket, G16 not really that pocketable.
Still having the old S90, small enough to fit into my jeans pocket. Acceptable IQ.
S120 around same size. There also the cheaper S200, but think can't shot RAW.
There are also few from other brand. Eg Olympus xz.

1) EOS-M with kit lens. Although not really pocketable, but was at an excellent price point and not heavy or bulky at all. Can easily be kept in a small bag if needed.

2) Another camera you might want is the Nokia 1020... it is going off at S$599 without contract these days and I dare say that its pic quality match and even surpass most PnS camera out there... except for those larger sensored one like the RX100 or G1X.

2nd hand fujifilm x20.

also can look at fujifilm XF1, i don't own one but i thought it looks really nice

Noted with the recommendations guys...

Just wondering,

is it better to get RX100 2nd hand or to get RX100 brand new?

I know I'm totally off RX100 mk 2. But are there any convincing factor to go for mk 2 and not 1?

The wifi and the flip screen is really a good addition for a nominal price difference, not the mention an improvement to the sensor. My friend who owns the mk 1 feels shortchanged because features like wifi and flip screen actually improves your shooting experience, not just marketing gimmicks

To me... it is the hotshoe... I can mount an external flash unit to the RX100 mk2.

I own the RX100 II and I swear by it. I had the initial contemplation like you, whether the 'minor' and 'marginal' upgrades were worth it.

I realized I used the flip screen A LOT. And I swear by the NFC function. Never used WiFi or hotshoe before though.

i say stick with rx100 idea. or extend even more budget, personally i'd like a ricoh GR.
or even no budget, can go for ricoh GRD 4.

As for the canon-m, i think $ is better spent on somewhere else.. like micro 4/3rds or even nikon 1 series. canon mirrorless : almost non existent lens choices and slow AF makes it a flop. dont take my words for it, just search internet for more info.

How does one use NFC without using WiFi?

Er... I thought NFC works using bluetooth and not wifi?

well, technically, the wifi works between the camera and the phone. What I meant here was I've never used it to connect to a router and transfer files/do anything with it before.

hi guys...think will go walk 1 round at Funan today to check prices of RX100 (1 and 2) and perhaps experience the difference between 1 and 2.

then maybe camp around the marketplace to see any 2nd hand for sale or not...

Personally like the Ricoh GRD 4. Bought it as a backup but end up carrying it more often. Great custom features. Looks slick and fits into your pocket (no skinny jean). GR would be a lot more pricey.

From your budget. You could buy GRD4 brand new if you can find it.

I got a question guys...

would 2/3 or 1/1.7 be good enough for Travel photography?

I have been thinking about it, if I can get a 2nd hand rx 100 for ~$500 then it would be good.

else I might have to look at other options (maybe S120 or FujiFilm XQ1)
