So many get charged. Really pity them. Just wonder, if they arranged the sales transaction to be done outside LI, would it still be an offence? LOL

Cannot be helped. The law is widely publicised. If the authorities know about the alcohol sales inside the NoAlcoholZone, and do nothing - they got problem. The buyers have a one-track-mind. No flexibility of thought at all. They could easily buy alcohol outside the zone and consume it outside the zone. Maybe too much alcohol made them all brain-dead.

punishing the rioter severely? or Singaporean getting branded as committing more crime and selling alcohol illegally.........

Will the act of punishment solve the problem?

Are you referring to punishing the rioters or punishing singaporean? It seems to me like punishing of singaporean who need to make a living selling alcohol.

if you consider alcohol one of the evils in society, you wouldn't consider it harsh on the Singaporeans who sell it.

and if you still consider it punishing Singaporeans, you should complain about brothels opened by Singaporeans in the red light district that's another social ill.

The problem is the Indian (from India) workers cannot hold their alcoholic drink. After getting intoxicated they become riotous.
So part of the solution is don't give them the excuse that they were under the influence of alcohol when they riot.

I have seen other people drink lots of alcohol in night clubs and they don't create any problem. They know how to behave in a social setting.

They know how to behave is because they are not drunk yet :bsmilie:

I have never seen a drunk person, who can still control themselves.

Stopping alcohol sales in Little India is part of the temporary solution.

In the short term it does not solve the problem if the Indian FWs were to now congregate somewhere else, buy and drink alcohol there.

In the long term, the problem solves itself when construction activity declines and there is less or no need for so many Indian FWs to be here.

The short term... if they do not gather at LI... dunno where they will gather, and hopefully... they will not create issues.....

Do you really believe this will happen? :bsmilie: It seems to be the declared target of the government to dig over Singapore once in 50 years.
The entire construction industry is a funny merry-go-round of money from government to companies and back again. It will never stop and in order to ensure the respective profitability of construction companies (indirectly owned / controlled by government) only workers from the said cheap countries can be used.

Tell me how selling canned beer can make a living.
I assume (and you are free to correct me) that you have been to some bars in the usual night life districts. Please compare the prices for canned beer (which was sold in the LI outlets to FW) with the prices of jugs (filled with diluted Tiger pee) sold to tourists and bar patrons. The bar business is profitable.

LI can beer are very lowly priced.... and if these shops cannot make some little money from alcohol... how you expect them to pay their rental, etc??? These are the customers..... and if they have nothing to sell, and they only want alcohol... who pay???

Club, pubs, the mark up is a lot, and the taste... some taste pretty diluted...

I still prefers coffee shop... in bottle/ can.... with higher mark up but comes with ice....

Provision shop mark up is the least....

Banning alcohol is bad idea... they don't care about those shop owners there....

Now the food courts and eating houses surrounding Little India No-Alcohol-Zone are worried that the Indian FW will switch over to congregate at their location. Suddenly got thousands of FW drinking alcohol. The regular local customers may reject the place and stay away.

It is just nonsensical to me....

After the Riots... ban alcohol for a week is understandable... but for months... how the business survive??? Heartlesss, brainless or head in hole logic??

If they need to drink, they will drink, and where will they drink? Not in LI... and problems will just spread..... whoever are making these decision are just taking the easy approach.... and I do not see why I need to pay so high salary to have people who just.... making such "common sense" decision... when it is a very complex issues......

The authorities need to do something to appease the public. Doesn't matter it is a nonsensical decision. You said it yourself, the other option is the hard one

They just take the easy solution.... and will you pay $2K for a L lens that take $50 to make??

The problem will just spread to else where, and if it worsen.. they will then react... all are just reaction..... there does not seem to have any planning....

This reaction moves is an issue....
