Camera suitable for 5 year old kid

Image quality is not a key factor. Mainly for kid to capture their own view during school excursion.
Ideally, light weight and "drop-proof" too.

For 'tough' cameras, check out LUMIX DMC-TS25 (FT25), Cyber-shot TF1 or Olympus TG-630?

Or if you have an old camera-equipped mobile phone lying around, that might work too if you can show your 5-yr-old how to use it?

Not really. It may not be user friendly and the kid does not know how to use it. Later bring but never take any pics.

Is your kid a photography prodigy? If so, it's gotta be at least a dSLR! Haha.

The usual suspects will be the Olympus Tough series and the Panasonic Lumix "FT" series.

Does your child had a camera phone? get him/her a phone, buy a 1020 or 1520, then include an armour to that phone,

The reason for the 1020 or 1520 was 41MP or 20MP of pure beautiful picture (matching and sometime surpassing many PnS cameras out there), with the armour, it make the phone much more durable against knocks and drops. And with the 1520, it had plenty of juice in it.

So... that should be one of the best choice out there.

I dont think a 5yo kid will be into the technicality of a camera. If anything its the composition of photos, capturing of moments that's gonna get him interested in photography. Any camera with a screen or vf and an auto setting would do imo.

not a 'serious' camera of course. If you are, have you tried Toys-R-Us, toy depts, etc?

I think it comes down to the individual child and how responsible/careful they are. Esp if you have younger children/toddlers at home, removable items like memory cards and batteries can be hazards.

100bucks P&S Olympus, Nikon or Canon is more than decent. Otherwise make do with Handphone cam, it's amazing nowadays. My Docomo has 16mp

i got 2 similar camera from Vtech for my twins. Beside taking crappy photos, it also has games....pretty fun for my boys....worth to buy for a 5 years old.....my boys are turning 5 this year as well.

Another thought, you can trick out any cheap PNS (Canon PowerShot A1400 looks like it'll be easy for kids to hold, with its beefy grip) into a 'drop proof' camera by adding bumpers with SUGRU. Imagine it could be an activity in itself if you can get your kid involved in the customising process.
