Nikon DF issue - cracked leather

Bought my new DF just 2 weeks ago, placed in my dry cabinet most of the time and barely have 30 shots with it.

Took it out this morning to prepare for its first shoot and found that the leather cracked (as seen in the photo).

I can guarantee it's not my fingernail, the angle doesn't allow for it. Dry cabinet humidity is at 55%.

Disappointed, I brought down to NSC. They agreed to replace the leather FOC but parts can only come in 3 weeks. They didn't seem surprised.

As a long time Nikon user, I'm rather disappointed with this $3k+ equipment.

I applaud NSC's service but am posting this to raise awareness among other DF owners.

I'm confused too, as one knows it's quite difficult to cut leather this thick and at this angle. Certainly didn't leave it around any knives.

Since its difficult to cut, cut mark did not go deep.
I believe that it starts near the battery compartment going upwards
Hence that big gap at the end ...

seriously, Im so sorry that it happened to your new camera
But look at the bright side. She's getting a face lift ...

Did you check properly when you firstly purchased from the shop?
It looks like your grip being cut with a knife or razor. Definitely not a crack.

I also have owned Nikon Df for two weeks and mine is perfectly fine.

Well Nikon must have serious QC issues to let it leave the factory. However again, I do inspect my gear carefully.

Thankfully, or unfortunately to my pained heart, I took a photo before I brought it home for Facebook.

Here's the photo in the shop. Quite quite perfect.

I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

I think it is, at worse, a cosmetic flaw. We all have concocted some interesting theories, but hey, we are all none the wiser, and even if what one of us raised is true, we cannot verify it anyway.

NSC has taken this up and intends to replace the leather at no charge. I would be quite pleased, except for the minor inconvenience of traveling to the service center.

It's actually real pony skin embossed to look like a leather imitation.

Japanese like cats so I'm sure that they won't skin cats to produce the leather for the Df. And if they did, people might just boycott the camera if they knew that Nikon had skinned maneki-neko to make the Df. I know I definitely would.

If you are not happy with the leather of Nikon Df, maybe can ask Hasselblad to customize for you, similar to Hasselblad Lunar
