pentax K-R start off

depends on your budget,
if you want to start the cheapest,
then you can find a good condition 2nd hand K-r (3 year old model now) at 200-250 sgd with kit lens or K-01, and it is good starter,
if you have 600 sgd budget,
get brand new K-30 (last year pentax entry level DSLR, same spec as current year K-50) with kit lens from shop, it is miles ahead of K-r,

if budget is no issue,
get K-3 then, as it is latest and best pentax camera available,
while, K-r, K-01, K-30 and K3 are all good start,
I started dirty cheap with K-x (which is 4 year old model now, and older than K-r), and now I use K-01. for your reference, you can check my photo here

one of biggest advantage of pentax camera is that you can find a lot of dirty cheap manual focus k-mount lens under 100 sgd for your pentax camera, as pentax camera support auto metering, image stablization with any lens,
common ones which covers 28mm, 50mm, 135mm, 200mm, and tons of cheap manual focus zooms like 28-105, 80-200.
pentax also has quite some cheap and great image quality auto focus lens, like DA35mm f2.4, and DA50mm f1.8 for your moving forward.
and also a lot of good price water ressistant auto focus lens, like DA 50-200 WR and DA 55-300 WR

honestly, NO. its too old. get at least a K30. i always believe that for a start, u need to have confidence in your gear. otherwise, u may keep doubting your gear. the body itself nothing wrong. but you may keep wondering because its an older model.
I will suggest finding a 2nd hand K30 or a new one if budget allows.

I actually wanted to get a K30.... but tried all the friendly neighbourhood store and some not so friendly store.... most dont have, some only the Blue color w/18-55Kit.... :dunno::embrass:........... so might as well wait a bit longer for K3 or for K50 to drop to K30 price... ;p
I saw your post, "newbie asking for opinion" in Canon sub-forum, it looks like you are on a tight budget. I would not even consider a K-R if I were you. At least get a K30 with a Kit lens, & I am sure that you will not regret choosing a Pentax.
It's ok but high ISO capability wise a bit dated.
With the K-30 around the K-R looks inferior but it is still a kickass camera imho. I used it for a while and the only minus for me was the battery life. But batteries are cheap. So if your budget is limited and you can find it for a steal why not? But if you can afford the K-30 then just go for K-30.
Some of my favourite pictures (I have a few with every camera haha) are taken with a K-r.

like what? i'm just being honest here :bsmilie: there is nothing wrong with the K-R and if u are happily using it, good for u - u won't be the one doubting your own gear.
but buy 2nd hand, its unavoidable - esp for newbies, esp if its an older model, if heart not comfortable, every small thing also start to doubt. damn sian one :sweat:
I used the K-X for a long time. when K5 came out, K-X prices on BnS lelong until i couldnt be bothered to sell. I upgraded to K5 anyway. later, when a friend wanted to start on photography, i sold him the kit-lens and body at "friendship price". guess what? i keep hearing :complain:"eh, not very sharp leh... " from time to time... the gear is fine. but once he take out his gear in front of other pple with newer, flashier, more expensive gear, it fugs up his head and he gets very insecure.
human mind very hard to predict one... i rather play devils advocate up front.
Any camera in your hands will look good. So TS remeber this having flashy gear is just just part of the equation. Being a good photographer completes the equation.
I used to own 1 as a back up when my K5 are on Japan holiday . Not a bad camera I will say . Still can get the job done with correct tactic

yeah,for now i am really on tight budget.unless i save alot more and wait longer....
hmmm,To me,as long as you understand the camera I think its all about the hands..unsure though.hahahha..and am not planning to go really pro on photography...maybe slowly progress as i have few other hobbies..hahaha
i am planning to take pictures of toys ( main) others would be depending of my creativity level,which is low.if K-R is a decent one,maybe i should get it as a start...?

How much is the K-r going for? If it's just a bit less than K-30, then just go for the newer camera. Detritus has a point that K-r has been around for some time, so the K-r you pick up may need shutter change, etc.
if u truly believe that its all about the hands, then the big question is WHY u need a dslr?
pple take pix of toys with small cameras with very good effect too - it has more to do with creative lighting than the type of camera used really...
pinholecam had done wonderful macro stuff with a Q and if u go to the macro forum, there are guys who take very interesting insect shots with a panasonic LX. its possible. insect macro is not that different from toys. its all about the details and the lighting. in fact, bugs are more challenging cos they dun stay still and u can't make them pose for u.
so maybe u want to answer some interesting questions for yourself first - what are u doing and what kind of equipment do u need to achieve it?
i were u, i might prefer to get an LX7 with a radio trigger and a few cheap slave flash.

The '心魔' is the hardest thing to get over.
It eats into a person and it will always feel inadequate even though the camera is already very good.
The Kx is such a wonderful little camera, with IQ that is really good even by today's standard.
However, camera tech has moved on and to me the K30 is the cumulation of all the 'good stuff' in features and good 16mp sensor that is probably near to all an enthusiast on a budget will need.
Just shoot a small toy with Q+adapter+F50 macro lens and show him what you mean. PS I have a Q to sell , since I have Q10 also, if he is convincedAt least recommend him a Q or MX1 lah!
