Photo equipments stolen from carpark

A female photographer just have her equipments stolen form her car today in a shopping center in Sydney CBD. She did not have insurance for them. This may be a lesson for all if we need for some reasons to leave equipments in the car:

That's a whole lot of stuff. To be fair did she lock her car door and kept those precious stuff out of plain sight ?

It also best if possible can put the stuffs out of sight (eg in boot) before reaching the carpark, ie before the trip. As someone may be hiding somewhere to keep lookout at that particular parking place.
Heard before someone did put bags etc in boot, but it was force open. So guess someone saw that when putting the stuffs in the boot.

my habit is to always dump everything in e boot when leaving the car. Some of my friends call me OCD, but I always remind them of the time when a friend got his windscreen smashed just for the cheapo cashcard.

What if the thief stole the car ?

Don't put valuables in the car unless you have a reliable security guard watching it for you.

Different culture and environment. Once upon a time maybe no one would steal like that in Sydney.
If thief is caught and turns out to be foreigner, say e.g. PRC then it is ammunition for Australian anti-foreigner feelings.

Just last week I was in Changi airport terminal 3 food court. The lady at next table left 2 very expensive LV bags on the chair and walked off far away to buy her food and was away for a long time. No one tried to steal her stuff. Lucky for her, she was in a relatively civilised part of Singapore. Still, don't try that in Chinatown or Little India or Geylang.

I always bring my gear with me, but there are some tips which I come across;

- keep your gears out of sight in the car, eg, lock in your car boot.
- put your gears in your booth before you drive off, not at the time when just you park your car.
- if you are driving a van, there is no car boot, get a styrofoam ice-box to put your camera bag inside, is cheap and conceal what is kept inside.
- if you have lots of gears, use a large piece of dark cloth to cover them up.
- don't display any decal or sticker telling people you are a photographers. or Leica/Canon/Nikon/Sony/Pentax user.
- park at a car park lots which have more open view, or near CCTV

No where on earth is safe. Even inside your house, you still can get injured. Heh heh!

I was at lantau overnight. Alone at a spot that not for sleeping. Nearby got campsite but I don't want to went back down for it. I sleeps alone with my camera items, also scare of been robbed but luckily, no one comes to my area.

I tried to be as close as I can to camera items unless I don't see a soul more than a hour, then I moves around while camera taking time lapse. Else must keep an eye on it if not, gone in 60 seconds.

It's sad to have to face a robbery, but Singaporeans can be rather complacent with security, being too used to conditions in Singapore..

Sometime my gf will walk around with her handbag unzip. Had to keep reminding her that although it quite Safe here, doesn't mean no crime, still need to safe guard and dun be too complacent.
More has to be vigilant when in other places (countries), some places it not safe to place bags on empty seat beside.

Any thieve that plan to steal photo equipment will target wedding photographer during the wedding dinner. Cos u always see the camera bag at a corner of the reception unattended.

Pro usually do this, but they will keep the exp len ar their body when moving ar the shoot. The bag at the corner .. they are pretty well prepare to lose it. (Speaking from my experience)

But for amateur who might follow this habit, its a big mistake.
