Nakhon Kitchen http://chinchaijiak.wordpress.com/2013/08/26/nakhon-kitchen/

Address: Hougang Street 21 #01-341 S530212

Operating Hours: Daily: 12:00 – 15:00, 17:30 – 22:00

I won’t term Nakhon Kitchen as a restaurant but more of a neighborhood eatery situated in the heartland of Kovan. This place serves considerably good Thai food at an economy price. Each dishes range from $5.00 to $8.00. Some say the food is great, but some said it’s overrated.

I can already smell the fragrance of spices-infused chicken while unwrapping the pandan leave. Although it’s deep fried, but it’s not dry at all, and in fact it’s really tender. i can see why some customers ordered a second or even a third portion and why it’s sold out when i first visited this place.

I would really like to mention this Tom Yum Soup. This really really suit my taste as i love my Tom Yum soul to be sour, and it must be spicy, and Nakhon Kitchen’s version got it all. I was not exactly ready for this soup when i took my first mouth and i almost got choked by it’s spiciness. In my opinion, this Tom Yum Soup is gotta be in my top 3 favorite Tom Yum Soup.

Beo Crescent Hainanese Curry Rice http://chinchaijiak.wordpress.com/2013/08/27/beo-crescent-hainanese-curry-rice/

Address: 40 Beo Crescent

Operating Hours: Daily: 6:30 till sold out (At about 3 or 4pm). Closed on Wednesday.

I had heard people raved about this curry rice that is situated in the neighbourhood of Beo Crescent. You can easily spot this place by looking out for a long queue forming outside a coffee shop. The old school stall has no sign board and everyone calls it the Beo Crescent Curry rice. The 67 years old boss opens his stall early in the morning before the sun rises and closes his stall when most of this dishes are sold out at about 3 to 4pm.

Their famous pork chops are on the must-try list of every foodie. Remember to order the Pork Chops separately so that it will not be soaked in the curry sauce. Oh god. This Beo Crescent Curry Rice Pork Chop is indeed crispy!

If you prefer your pork chop to be slightly thicker and a little bit more chewy, like Scissors Cut Curry Rice Pork Chops, you may not favour this. But for me, this is what makes their pork chops unique. Beo Crescent Curry Rice pork chop easily found itself into the must-order list for my next visit.

Basically the marinate and the flour coating taste very similar to the the pork chops and is not difficult to guess the texture too. Yeap. Crispy! Except for the tail, the other parts of the prawn were deshelled which makes it easy for diners to feast on them. The prawn is definitely not overcooked and i can taste the freshness of the prawn.

Drips Bakery Cafe http://chinchaijiak.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/drips-baker-cafe/

Address: 2 Tiong Poh Road #01-05 Singapore 160082

Operating Hours: Sun – Thur: 11:00am – 9:30pm Fri & Sat: 11:00am – 11:00pm

This place is recommended by my colleague who had high rating for their sandwich where the bread is freshly baked everyday. Drips bakery cafe offers a good range of pastries, tarts, cookies and cakes as well as hand crafted coffee.

At Drips Bakery Cafe, the tables are well spaced apart with a high ceiling. There are also sofa seats at the other end of the cafe that is situated below a sun roof.

I heard that the pastry chef from Drips Bakery Cafe was once with Shangri-la. We were fortunate to be able to try the tarts freshly prepared from the kitchen.

When the tarts were brought out from the kitchen, everyone started crowding at the counter and most of the tarts were snapped up in no time. I thought the crust taste very similar to a butter cookie but the best part of the tart is the cream filling. I like the smooth texture of the cream and for the fact that it’s simply not too sweet.

Ramen Keisuke Tori King http://chinchaijiak.wordpress.com/2013/08/29/ramen-keisuke-tori-king/

Address: 100AM, Amara Hotel, 100 Tras Street, 03-15
Operating hours: 11.30am to 10.00pm daily

Tori King = 鸡王(Chicken King). The founder, Keisuke Takeda, was once selected as the top ramen chef in Japan and crowned as Ramen King. We can easily identify this place by the queue forming out the restaurant during dinner. No reservation is allowed so just be prepared to queue, especially during dinner time.

9620100779_4eec54aa95_z.jpg

Tori King uses chicken broth unlike the majority, many traditional ramen places use pork broth. In comparison to Marutama ramen which also uses chicken broth, the taste of Tori King’s broth is stronger and much more flavorful. The stock is made from chicken bones, chicken feet, Japanese seaweed and an assortment of vegetables and boiled for eight hours. The original soup base comes with a piece of pork slice, giant seaweed, half boiled egg and the star of the show – the chicken drumstick!

9620176665_184961ed9c_z.jpg

Chef Keisuke said the chicken is boiled for 45 minutes and submerged overnight in soy sauce and is grilled before it’s served. The chicken drumstick is so tender that the meat comes off the bone so easily. A pair of chop sticks is all you need. No fork and knife involved.

Soi Polo Fried Chicken (Bangkok Food) http://chinchaijiak.wordpress.com/2013/09/05/soi-polo-fried-chicken-bangkok-lumpini/

Operating hours: 7.00am to 10.00pm

Some of the online reviews say that Soi Polo Fried Chicken offers the “best fried chicken in bangkok”. Unlike the SabX2 Wanton Noodle, this place is not much mentioned in Singapore’s blog or site. I gave this place a miss for my last two Bangkok visits so i made it a point to try it out when i can afford the time, and i am glad that i did!

Soi Polo Fried Chicken comes in two portion sizes, half chicken for 100 baht or whole chicken for 200 baht. Their version is not the flour breaded deep-fried style but more of a hotel banquet kind of roasted chicken. The chicken itself is rather decent. It’s tender and not too dry. The one thing that makes this chicken really unique is their fried condiment that was scattered generously over the chicken.

If you are looking for a convenient eat, then I think you can skip this place. But if you are someone like me who goes overseas in search for hidden gem and good food, plot your map well and make a trip down!

You can get the directions to Soi Polo fried chicken from my blog.

Mr Jones Orphanage http://chinchaijiak.wordpress.com/2013/09/09/mr-jones-orphanage/
Address: SeenSpace Thonglor 13, Bangkok, Thailand 10110
Operating hours: 10.00am to 12:00 midnight (last order at 11:00pm) daily

I guess as a child everyone would had dreamt of such a place where there are endless candies, cakes, chocolate and ice cream. Mr Jones orphanage is exactly such a place, only that you need to pay for it. LOL.

I would have to say the selling point of this cafe is the design of their cafe instead of just food. Upon entering this “wonderland”, on the left lies a kitchen that is literally full of pastries, with the ceiling decorated with a giant wooden clock.

I am most impressed by their attic dining area and this is where i choose to have my meal. There is a ‘secret attic’ that is leaded up by a flight of narrow wooden stairs. I have to bend my knees and lay low so that my head won’t knock onto the ceiling while exploring the “secret hiding place”. Low seating sofas and tables are placed at various corners of the attic with decorative items like toy soldiers, library books and plush toys are scattered all over the dimly lit attic, with no ‘adult’ (the waitress) looking at what you are doing.

Address: Blk 261 Serangoon Central #01-11
Opening hours: 9.00am – 10.00pm daily

Where can you get the cheapest golden sand custard bun (黄金流沙包) in Singapore? Baker Talent’s golden custard bun only cost me $0.90 each. This bakery’s bread is not exactly the best tasting one in Singapore but i can say that it’s definitely one of the cheapest around town and the taste is actually quite decent.

I have yet to try this “Butter Boom” (爆浆奶油) at only S$0.60. A friend told me the taste is only so-so and the butter don’t even “burst” out. If anyone had tried before, feel free to leave a comment on the taste.

The Deck http://chinchaijiak.wordpress.com/2013/09/13/the-deck-arun-residence-bangkok-phra-nakhon/

Sharing a good place in Bangkok to shoot Wat Arun. I googled the best place to shoot Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) and found this place - The Deck.

Shot at 35mm using a crop sensor:

I will always try to make some time to visit attractions for some shots while I’m overseas. The Deck is situated just directly opposite Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) across the river, which is within walking distance from The Grand Palace and Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) or Wat Phra Chetuphon. It is the perfect place to take a good shot of Bangkok’s Wat Arun.

The only problem with this place is for it’s location as Singaporeans (or any other visitors) very muck like to stay around Pratunam/Asoke/Siam area for it’s shopping convenience. I had to take a cab ride that took me around 20 minutes to reach The Deck @ Arun Residence.

If you are already visiting the Grand Palace, Wat Pho or Wat Arun, why not have a rest at The Deck for a drink before heading back to Hotel.

Nicely taken. I can vouch for this stall. Very tasty and always very crowded if you reach after 12pm. I worked around the area and I always make it a point to be there at 11.30am to get a seat and also to eat more peacefully. The place can be a bit small but it does give the authentic feeling of eating in a Japanese eatery.
