Budget set for trying out?

Hi there, just wondering if its worth buying those ebay filter set for trying out?

or just save up for Lee kit? anyone have suggestion for a cheap but decent filter kit to try out for beginner?

Look at Tianya holder set, compatible with Cokin P. You can buy in single pieces, holders and filters. If Lee comes in Cokin P size, you only need to get the filters, not the holders again.
This ebay offer has lots of adapter rings, pointless. Get one or two (e.g. for your largest and smallest lens diameter), get step up rings for everything in between. Get only what you need.
Optically, watch out for flare and colour casts. Shoot RAW to fix the latter one in processing.

thx for the quick reply.. i was looking at the set because i can try out stacking ND and GND filters to with my kit lens to try out first.
They have whole range of adapter ring so i can reuse the kit for future lens upgrade.

i wanted the whole range of ND2,4,8 so i can try all the different stops but are step up rings better than using these adapter rings?

i was looking the haida range too but i would need to buy different size filter kit again if i upgrade which will add up to the cost of LEE kit..

The ebay OEM set is much much cheaper than Tian Ya. Currently, I own Tian Ya, Hitech, Haida and other OEM brand of filters. Currently I am using Hitech GND filter (hard and soft) most of the time, and it less color cast than Tian Ya during sunset time and more easy to pp. For big stopper, I am using Haida ND 3.0 (10 f/stop) which had some color cast but less than B + W (from my own testing result) and can easy pp (my pp skill is very very basic).

If ask me what is the basic filters if need for landscape photographic:

1. GND 3 f/stop (soft or hard for some case) brand : Hitech
2. CPL
3. ND filter 6 or 10 f/stop. I will recommend Haida brand, ring type.

Eventually when you start stacking filters on Ultra Wide Angle (16mm-20mm on FF), you will have to upgrade to those 100mm filters.

Tian Ya lor. Cheap and good enough for starting out. There would be some color casts and stuff, but you really can't complain at the price you're paying.

wow thx for the recommendations actually im interested to know what u guys buy as a starter kit for trying out using filters.. and if anyone did try out this ebay kit..
i know some cheap CPL is a waste of money so im hoping for some feedbacks from gurus here.
or do you guys started out straight from Hitech and LEE filters so at least i know im wasting my time n money buying the ebay set.

Since this OEM set can fit cokin p filters so i suppose this holder can be reuse for Hitech/Lee filters?

I've mine from the ebay for about S$16 for full set kit of 9 adapter rings+ holder +3 GND+ 3ND. I suggest you look into the bid item, it could be much cheaper if you bid at the right time. The quality of this filter set may not be as good & may have colour cast as some bro here has pointed out. And also i found that the adapter ring is hard to fit into the lens, if this bother you then look at somewhere else, otherwise it's cheap & worth buying.

I started out using Tian Ya for a few years, it was ok for normal use but for sunset between 6:15pm to 7pm had very bad color cast (for strong sun light), I shoot in RAW but still found it very difficult to pp away the color cast. As a result many beautiful sunset opportunity was gone due to this reason. I found Hitech GND had less color cast compare to Tian Ya, and during day time it help to produce very beautiful blue sky compare to Tian Ya. But, I still using Tian Ya under rough weather/surrounding condition, ie strong wind with sand/dust.

I am still using three filters holder (Cokin P holder) bought from Tian Ya for the Hitech filter.

Hitech GND filter is about 2 to 3 time the price of Tian Ya's GND, but looking into the image that it produce it worth very cent. I found it most useful for my landscape photographic is the 3 f/stop GND soft and hard, you might want to consider to start with.

thx for the feedback i guess cant really expected much from a whole set for $20 lolz.. think i might just splash out for a try since Cokin p filter holder can fit higher end filters too..

For Hitech filters you can get it from T K Foto.

Nice to know that you like the sunset photo and we are here to learn. Maybe soon we will be able to see your posting at Landscape Section and not at Newbies Corner.

+1 to the Haida.

I'll suggest you just get the 10 stop and go from there, rather than get all and maybe end up not using the others or that they are not as good in the end.
The low color cast and price as can be seen from the samples posted up by many in the Haida review thread speaks for itself.

I used the Tianya previously, but in the end, the 10 stop always left a magenta/green cast.
Not that its not usable, I used it for years (though admittedly I'm not much of a landscape shooter, which is why I held on to using it for so long)
Alternatives were pretty expensive before the Haida anyway. (eg. B+W; Lee; Cokin)


IMO, the screw on ND has one advantage over the slot type.
There is no reflection onto the filter surface (which is a pain on tianya slot type holder )
