I remembered back in the 80s and 90s, almost everyone is proud of hanging the national flag in the hooks implanted outside the window sill. You see blocks and blocks of flags and you know national day is here again. Fast forward to 2013. Other than those grass root selected blocks that are lined with flags, the neighbourhood blocks are all barren. The government stats show less than 10k of flats are occupied by PR so why are people not hanging their flags anymore? Please take part in the poll...

For me... my whole block is being repaired... no point to hang flag till painting is complete...

But I'm sure you are hoping for more of an 'not feel belonging' answer...

I notice that our dollar note have no flag too. Only a person face, a lion and a tiger. Anyone know why?

Also no Merlion, Changi Airport, Esplanade, Chilli Crab... but, easiest explanation... the Singapore emblem of Lion & Tiger with the Crescent Moon and 5 stars already there...

My Block repainting now (started since Jan 2013) so cannot hang.

Why so long ??

Mine started in June (washing) and now the painting begins... at the next 2 block 1st...

because if you look at Singapore from 20KM up, all the HDBs and landed properties form the Singapore Flag :)

My side no renovation no cleaning no nothing. Also no flags.

my block face the road, so RC will come every year without fail to hang for us.. and then they will take it down.. this has been the case for past 10 years i guess

Because the ruling political party in Singapore is a dominant party, and claims to represent ‘Singapore’, there is a conflation between Singapore and the ***. By association, the Singapore flag takes on the meaning of the *** too. The differential distribution of flags based on support for *** institutions reinforces this conflation. Thus, Singaporeans who resist the flag do so in order to dissociate themselves from others who are *** supporters or sycophants (The Straits Times, 3 September 1994). Those who are able to differentiate between loyalty to the nation and loyalty to the *** thus refuse to hang the flag.

Er, I hope I did not turn your thread into a political thread.

Anyway this year is the first year I am hanging the flag because the RC member of my block gave me a free flag. I also wanted to teach my children that while their lives is a little screwed in this country, they should also love their country.

*** = P*P

I do love my country, but forcing myself to cut my hair short and dragging myself back to reservist year after year is enough patriotism for me :)

i call Bullshite...

because it's not because i'm unpatriotic or don't support the nation or whatever.

it's because i'm too lazy to hang the flag out.

and i fear i might fall.

also, the writer is trying to emphasize that we're a militarized state under military dictatorship... which i'm trying very hard to visualize how tough national service is (it's like a holiday camp by the way, unless you're too weak to take physical stress)

either that or a communist state. by the time i got to that part, i'm lost in the allegations and assumptions.

of course the parade needs to be in order. what do you think? you want the spectators and citizens to run amok on that day, perhaps having stampedes that could produce fatalities? i welcome the order that is present during the parades. who wouldn't want that?

other than being a ridiculous article full of allegations (which feels more like it came from someone who reads too many conspiracy theories), i don't think i have to take this seriously too

My rc never distribute free. I don't like the idea if paying GST for buying

i agree that the article is a little ridiculous. The point about the flag though is also repeated in wikipedia.

Singaporeans are encouraged to display the national flag outside their homes during National Day celebrations, and residents' committees, particularly those of public housing estates, often arrange co-ordinated displays. However, some Singaporeans decline to do so as they associate it with the People's Action Party, the ruling party in Parliament, rather than with the nation.[56]too

Who cares? Hanging a flag only says you did hang a flag. That's all. Similarly if you did not hang a flag, means you did not.

It says nothing about your loyalty or lack of, like or dislike of particular parties, happiness, etc.....
