In normal situation, we will contemplate and think of all sort of scenarios. In real situation, your basic instinct will react and that will be the true action. Just like many people panic and cannot react during emergency.

IMHO, this question does not mean anything. The answer can be very different (or exactly the same) with the action that a human will eventually take in such situation.

For example one might answer 'safe the child' or 'safe the parents', but will most likely die2 try to safe both.

For me: A parent will always sacrifice for a kid, thus saving the kid is the only selection.

Let's call the person making the decision A, his/her parent B, and his/her child C. One thing completely ignored here is the quality of the relationship between A and B, between A and C, as well as between B and C. In real life, a person may or may not be close to one's child and also one's parent. A large part of the outcome, I submit, will depend the quality of these relationships.

Save the one who is nearest and easiest to save first.
