Questions on phottix odin

Hi guys,

I gotten a set of odin (tx & rx) to pair with my 600ex-rt and after trying it out for awhile, i notice some scenario which puzzle me and couldn't find much information regarding to it in the net hence decided to check with odin users here.

Scenario encountered as below:

1) Setting dialled in from tx doesn't reflect on flash lcd such as FEB comp, switch from ETTL to M mode (flash still showing ETTL) and etc.
I took several test shot with various setting and check on histogram and it is working accordingly to my dialled settings, except that no changes made to flash lcd.

2) Zooming of flash in M mode from tx will only work when the flash head is tilt to 45 degree facing horizon. I cannot zoom from tx if the flash head is vertical (eg for bouncing) but zooming can be done if dial in directly from flash lcd.

3) HSS and SCS dialled in from tx also not shown on flash lcd but it actually works during test shot.

Are these mentioned issues shortcoming of odin or am i missing something here?

This is my 1st time using TTL triggers after moving on from Manual types.

It's not a permanent connection, the data are only transferred in the moment before the shot goes off. That's why you can't see the changes on LCD screen but the flash does what you dialed in.

2) Zooming of flash in M mode from tx will only work when the flash head is tilt to 45 degree facing horizon. I cannot zoom from tx if the flash head is vertical (eg for bouncing) but zooming can be done if dial in directly from flash lcd.

Have you tried putting the flash on your hotshoe and do the same? You will find that the flash head zoom only works as long as the flash points straight towards the subject, in line with the lens (which is 90 degrees, btw). Zoom here means that the flash moves the mirror behind the bulb to focus or distribute the light according the focal length of the lens.
In any other position (e.g. pointing upwards for bounce flash) the zoom is deactivated because it's pointless to follow any lens data. Your manual input is required.

My friend said the same thing as u mentioned regarding flash lcd display. I'm relieved knowing this information that it's normal.

As for the zoom part when mounted on hotshoe, the zoom head works as per normal like what u mentioned. If pointing upward for bounce, I will set zoom manually if needed.

I am guessing the odin doesn't include this feature of zooming flash manually in any angle except 90degree straight towards subject.

Im not sure about your flash but my Nikon sb800 can only manually adjust the zoom when the zoom head is pointing straight aka 90 degree. If on bounce mode aka pointing upwards at any angle not 90 degree, the zoom cannot be adjusted.

This is something you need to set on the flash manually, always. It cannot even set by a Canon camera when the flash is hotshoe-mounted on it.
