Visiting Singapore

I've been lurking on and off for a few years on the forum, but I haven't posted before - sorry in advance if I'm in the wrong spot! I did a quick search before I posted, but couldn't find much info, hence the new thread

I'm from Sydney, and coming to Singapore for two weeks on the 19th. It's been a few years since I was last here, though, so I was wondering where, other than the obvious tourist spots, is good to photograph? I do lots of urban-type photography (I don't think I'm in-your-face enough for street photography!). And is there anywhere I'm likely to run into other photographers?

I also walk on crutches, so while I can get around well enough, long photo walks aren't really my thing. I'm much more the lurk-in-kopitiam type.

And singapore is generally very disabled-friendly so you should have no issues with crutches.

these are the few MRT stations I think are more convenient and have nice buildings and activities, in no order of preference

1 - raffles place
2 - city hall
3 - bugis
4 - chinatown
5 - dhoby ghaut
6 - orchard

You should post here more often becasue whenever CS photographers visit Sydney they always make time to a cup of coffee with me.

I can imagine how big a welcoming party they'll have for me when I visit Singapore. :bsmilie:

Heh. I'm actually pretty shy irl. But if anyone does visit Sydney, and would like a coffee outside working hours...


I was looking at the weekend gatherings; but I'm coming over with my partner, who's working. Since the weekend is the only time he'll have free, I want to spend some time with him (instead of just gloating to him about my holiday, like I will be the rest of the time )

I was looking at the weekend trips before, but I'll be travelling with my partner, who's coming over for work, and the weekend is about the only time we'll both have free, sadly.

welcome to clubsnap, you can also consider the Bugis area, specifically the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple at Waterloo Street, on 22 June is a 15th day of luna month, it will be lot of happening over, devotees usually visiting temples during first and 15th days of luna month. (no photo taking inside the temple, outside and around that areas there are a lot of activities )

There maybe a few Sydneysiders hanging on and off in ClubSnap. But I'm a permanent resident in ClubSnap although I've been living out of Singapore. I enjoy using Singlish and Hokkien a dialect I spoke when I was young in Malaysia.

hmm. i think you might like tiong bahru. its where i used to stay, many stories to tell...

Old shop houses, new public housing, a wetmarket, shopping centers, old buildings in the process of being demolished etc.

Its more off the beaten track. most tourists will visit the core places like waterloo street, bugis etc. but if you wanna know the heartlanders, tiongbahru is quite an interesting place

Edited to add: another thing I've just realised is that I'm going to need a new tripod; lost mine when my camera was stolen earlier this year. Is Sim Lim the best place to shop for one? I'm fine with a crappy, cheap, light one - I'm photographing with an EOS 400d until I buy a replacement, anyway, and with the crutches, the smaller and lighter, the easier it is for me.

I believe a better place to get photographic equipments would be at funan IT mall and peninsular plaza where you will have more shops to choose from.

For the love of all that's good and holy, avoid sim Lim. Only OP on the 6th floor is OK. Sim Lim is a nest of crooks. Every day tourists get fleeced to buy $100 "protection filters" and "macro and wide angle converter" lenses for $300 etc. Tell anyone you know who visits singapore to avoid that place at all costs, just go to Funan where there are many trusted shops and it's easier to reach, too.
