Dear Seniors,

I am tasked to do a proposal for getting a walk about camera + lens + flash

What am I shooting:

People, nightlife , clubbers , drinkers at a rooftop al-fresco environment.

Finishing:

To be printed via a Fuji Xerox DCP 700 printer in A4 size

Seeking help for seniors, what is the most recommended equipment I should get.

Constraints: Looking at starting out a concept for business startup. But do not want to go into spending a big amount.

Try to take a look at Market Place here and have a feel what is the price range for the equipments that you are looking for.

Just get any entry level dslr with kit lens and flash.

Actually there is no budget allocated at the moment.

but I would say I m looking at investing like a conservative $3k - $5k ?

That's quite a sum. With that money you could already consider a full-frame camera with a external flash.

External flash is a must for some night shooting.

But do u hv any brand in mind?

Not really.. if we are looking at brand new equipment, a normal aps-c body (mid range) + constant f2.8 lens/prime lens + original speedlite would cost close to about 3k.. of course that is if TS is going for brand new equipment..

N personally I think it's better to over budget but spend lesser rather than the other way round..

I am looking at Nikon.

camera frame wise ideally would be new but I m thinking that a lens is more important ?

I7-55 or 24-70 ? Would that make me a over budget ?

A 24-70, D600 will come close to 5k. if without body they u still have half of your 5k

What will you do with the camera and lense after the shoot is done? Will you still be using the camera? How long is the shoot?

Ever thought of just renting? Then you can get the best gears to do the job with a smaller budget. Everyone will be happy :)

It will be a daily affair that i take pictures of my guests, once taken, they can choose to buy or it might be included in the admission prices

Ok since got business budget, then just go for any FF cam + 24-70 + flash will be ok liao.

You reminded me of this type of service...I encounter one last week, picture ready within 5mins of taking and cost $4 each for a 4R size. They were using the setup I mention above :) The photog is a pro though so the quality was pretty good.

Bro where did u see that service? Care to share ?

Any particular why must it be a FF ?

It's just a normal dinner hosted by an organization. I think the photog brought his team there. While he shoot, someone at the backend process (thru eye-fi if I not wrong) the pics.

The assistant then passed the photos table by table for interested guests to view b4 deciding if they wanna buy.

That said, I think you will need a long long time to break even if you choose to do what you intended. The one I saw was different, it's like an extra income to the team, they get paid regardless if they sell any of those pics on site.

Btw, I think Singapore Flyer, Zoo and Sentosa etc do have such services but it's more directed at tourists. The results are also paltry and slipshod.

Lastly it is not a must to be FF, any camera will do. It's just a personal preference from past event experiences :)

FF body handle night shoot better if without flash.
And the working distance can be closer since there will crowd of pp moving.
DOF will also be better in FF.

Sony a99 with 28-75

Working distance has nothing to do with FF vs. APS-C. DOF will be thinner in FF, which is not necessarily a good thing.

You might be better off with a good aps-c camera like an a58 and pair it with a Carl Zeiss 16-80 and a 35mm lens

Flash is needed for illumination. and rashkae is right. the right tool for the job.

just because everyone's using a Full Frame camera, it doesn't mean that everyone needs to get one.

yes, better High ISO, shallower DOF... but did anyone stop to think about whether they need all that?

TS... actually you can looked at different brands... Sony and Pentax both had excellent camera range too, not just Nikon (and Canon). Also it is really difficult for anyone to give any meaningful advises as to which lens to purchase because different people had different preferences to which focal length suits them better.

If I were to choose, I would most definitely go with the 5DmkIII with a 24-70mm f2.8L lens for my setup. I have also seen people who would go for Sony a99 camera body with (maybe a 50mm or 35mm setup). To have a flash is optional actually... although I would most certainly recommended one. Other things to looked out for is a tripod (with a good tripodhead) and/or a monopod.
