Hi All CSers!

Like to know which platform would you choose for videography purpose, 5D M3 or the GH3.

Currently, i'm using GH2. Thinking of upgrading in coming months. Was thinking of GH3 but a switch to FF looks tempting too. GH3 has the 60p option in full HD which is a great + as compared to 5D. But 5D has higher bitrate and looks more pro when doing commercial works.

On whole, which platform would you think that I'll benefit most on a long run?

Please help ease my headache.

Thanks! :)

I'd pick A99 for the autofocus, clean HDMI output and the xlr inputs. Plus you can use the viewfinder for video.

Sony does have a big improvement on their DSLR range recently. But it stills lacks the high bitrate which i need for commercial works.

Sony, Canon, Panasonic can all be use for commercial works... and had already been used for commercial works. As for how each camera look doesn't actually matters... and if it does to you, then get the 5DmkIII (since you mentioned that it look more pro).

Personally I would go for 5DmkIII, but that is basically due to my own personal preference and the 'feel'.

Any reason for that feel. Sorry cos 70% of the ppl i asked all go for 5D. I knw 5D Mark II was a legend but is the Mark III same or really much more better?

1080 60p at 28mbs with clean HDMI out not enough meh?

If u are used to the focusing on gh3, better stick to the m43 format. FF is easier to lose your focus so not advisable if u need to do a lot of rack focusing cause u might not be used to it.

The only thing to consider is the ISO. Because the details are pretty good on both cams but once we start shooting at night, 5D starts to have the advantage with useable footage even at 5000 iso (looking really clean after some post denoise)

I do love the view finder while shooting on gh3 outdoors. Some times hard to mount my smallHD EVF on 5D3.

Well... for one... as compared to 5DmkII, it had better low light noise performance (I am not going to compare Canon and Panasonic or Sony or be pulled into a brand war though, you can do a search in the net and surely there are quite a bit of information on those), I feel that it is really important for videography. Secondly, I like the feel of 5DmkIII as compared to many other DSLR (including the A99 and of course the GH3), that is a personal thing, very difficult to explain, just that I like their button placement, the feel of the buttons, the menu, the grip design, etc etc.

Do note that A99 is a good SLT camera, I have not really play with one before, but I have read fabulous reviews on it... but somehow, Sony's SLT and NEX and me just don't click :( (But I do hope that Canon had a liveview AF system that is as good or almost as good as the Sony though.)

I have a Sony PnS and liked it though, and that is abt all.

GH3 has the 60p option in full HD which is a great + as compared to 5D.

Note that local (PAL) GH3 set has 50p, not 60p.

As for what will benefit you most in the long run, it depends on your personal preferences, plans/objectives.

Since you are currently using the GH2, you would already have some m4/3 lenses. I saw the results from the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, and it is outperforming the canon 5d mkiii. It's also rather affordable. That should give you an extra option. Check out the 43 rumour site for the side by side comparison of results from the 2 cameras.

Ya, saw this little thingy launched at NAB recently. But think its still a long way before we get to see a actual real world test on it. Still a lot to be updated on the 2K ver too

Ya, noted. It's still a big feature as compared to 5D :)

Ya, ergonomically, Canon is still better. I used to own the 60D. Though not top of the line but its straight forward and easy to use. But micro 4/3 is light, and it has that electronic viewfinder which i love using too. Its a bit of both between the 5DM3 & GH3 which i desire and what the A99 offers. If the A99 has similar bitrate as then its definitely a knockout to the other 2 camera :)

What bitrate do you require?
