New firmware is out :

The new Nikon D800 A:1.01 / B:1.02 firmware update contains:

  1. Support for the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR has been added.
  2. Subject tracking performance in AF-C (continuous-servo autofocus) autofocus mode with framing using the viewfinder has been improved.
  3. Gamut for Adobe RGB images displayed in the camera's monitor has been changed. This enables more vivid display of images.
  4. With live view photography in [M] (Manual) exposure mode, exposure preview was always on. This issue has been resolved.
  5. In some very rare cases when certain memory cards were used, movie recording would stop, even when the time remaining display indicated remaining recording time. This issue has been resolved.
  6. With shooting at an image quality setting of TIFF (RGB) and an image size setting of Small, the right edge of images contained a purple line. This issue has been resolved.
  7. In some rare cases, images recorded in JPEG format could not be opened by some software applications. This issue has been resolved.
  8. In some very rare cases, colors would change with shooting when white balance was set to a specific color temperature, as with Preset manual or Choose color temp. This issue has been resolved.

just updated it...

wonder how much improvement is in for the AFC. can't really test it out yet at home. But any improvement in AFC is always welcomed.

The rest of the changes dunno what they are talking about....

Finally after such a long wait. I've been hit with the green light hang writing to SD card ever so often, hope this firmware fixes the issue.
Since I've shifted from AFS-S to AFC-S for better keeper shots, can't wait to test the new AFC this weekend.

And the D4 firmware update has similar fixes to D800 with this interesting feature added:
"Images are sharper and appear more three dimensional."

Ya.... Me too... Have encountered the above problem several times with more than one SD card... Hopefully the update can solve it..

Bad news: someone mentioned on the web that third-party batteries and grips no longer work after the update (at least on D800E).

Update: Just tried out my Meike grip. Except for no longer being able to turn on and off the camera from the grip, everything else seems to be in order. Whew!

Same for the D600?

Updated mine. No problem yet.

Updated in the morning, no issues.

any improvements seen with AFC??

Dpreview forums has quite a number of people saying huge improvement in the hit rate

the AF is swweeeeettt!! Bull's eye~~

did your AFtune settings change? My did not seem to SEEM to change.

Not sure if I should retest the AFtune settings?

I had a huge problem using my Sandisk SD card to update. The difficulty is copying the files over from my Mac. I dont seem to have a problem w the CF card.

I am hoping to see the improvement over the WB. Been giving me lots of problem. Haha.

I set everything back to zero. one of my problematic lens 28mm f/1.8G does not require fine tune now.

Jace: Yes, I hope to see improvement too.

Hi,
I did notice AFMA change a bit. did anyone test and confirm that those left focus issues which we had to bring to NSC to tune when the D800 came out got change?
thanks
