For the warranty to be valid, please bring along the warranty card and proof of purchase (ie,receipt or bank statement)

This is wrong.
If the product is badly made in the factory and contains a defective component that will cause failure/crack, then there is no question of warranty being valid or not.
Even if your camera is past the warranty date, the manufacturer must acknowledge that they sold you a lemon and make good.
In addition they must apologise profusely for causing you so much trouble.
Since when was a bank statement issued to support a simple camera purchase? Which planet did this Oly guy come from?
