Hundreds of dead pigs fished from Shanghai river - CNN.com

Silo mentality.
Farmers chuck their diseased pigs into the river and let them flow down stream. Then it is not their problem.

How can it be that the PRC authorities do not know who are the culprits.

It is not only 5 pigs.

Hauling 6,000 pig carcasses from the farm to the river side & dumping them, cannot escape observation and notice.

If one is Muslim living in Shanghai, safer to drink bottled mineral water temporarily.

Moreover, if 6,000 pigs die from disease in a short time, then something is terribly wrong in the farms.

According to this report, this practice has been on-going, just never on this magnitude.

Unfortunately humans have always been polluting rivers and water sources.

I'm always caught by surpise how S'porean always think that Govt/Authorities KNOWS EVERYTHING.... :bsmilie:

Does anyone knows how many Pig Farms are there up river from Shanghai ?? ... or could they even confirm it really came from farms up river and not ship in from other place where there isn't a river for the farmer to dump.

But seriously... China's environmental protection really su*ks... and the common people is paying for it with Health Issue all the time...

The pigs are all tagged. The tags identify the farms.

It could be that the numbers just correspond to a region but the authorities don't actually track which pigs are from which farms. I suppose it won't make much sense to do so either.

Actually, for disease prevention/tracking, farms are identified too.

 Oh no!! The river is being spam-med!!

I think thanks to China the whole Pacific ocean is not halal anymore.

Aaah. What link to the Great Bacon Crisis of 2013?

Ok, but that's just your word for it. Is there any article that shows this (I hope this doesn't sound glib as that isn't my intention, I just want to find out for my own understanding)?

No wonder these days there is a film of oil over my cup of drinking water.

And it smells of 烧肉.

This is for you.

Using the river to over come the great firewall of China :bsmilie:

The hackers must be desperate :bsmilie:

Apparently the PRC authorities caught some farm already.
Besides being an environmental problem, this is a cultural problem as well.

I think nowadays the Japanese would not do this to their own countrymen - chuck a diseased dead animal carcass upstream to pollute drinking water of those living downstream. (Although Japanese industrial tycoons did knowingly pollute Minamata Bay with mercury in the past).

But present-day PRC Chinese still don't care. And they are likely to repeat it in future. 6 months later, this is old news and all would have forgotten. Some other big event would be in the headline news.

The PRC authorities resolutely say there is no problem with the drinking water.

The PRC people do not believe it.

Some PRC netizen comments: (credit - http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_asiapacific/view/1259736/1/.html)
"So many dead pigs and the water quality has not been affected. Who are you fooling?" said one online posting under the name Youshan Wanshui6_6.

In another posting on a Twitter-like microblog, Shoppinggirl Caijiajia said: "The dead pig incident has completely ruined Shanghai's image."

"Without punishment, without accountability, how can it be guaranteed that this kind of thing won't happen again? Please give the Shanghai citizens drinking the dead pig water a clear explanation," she added.

According to this report, there were 70,000 diseased dead pigs in early 2013. If the rest of the 63,400 diseased pig carcasses were buried or burned, then good. It is tempting for a PRC farmer suffering financial losses from dead livestock, to entertain the idea of quick sale of dead diseased pigs for eventual resale in the markets. Probably the PRC canned pork products are safe - we take their word for it, if they say so.

It was the single largest lost of lives out at sea in a man-made accident. Some people might find this little titbit of trivia interesting to know.

Current mega livestock carriers such as the MV Ocean Drover (IMO 9232852) and the new MV Ocean Shearer currently under construction from the Australian Wellard Group have a maximum capacity of some 23,000 cattle or 125,000 sheep and are regarded as a symbol of pride and strength by the Australian agriculture industry.
