Hi all, I recently acquired an old industar 50-2 (50mm f/3.5 m39 mount) from ebay, as well as a m39-nex adapter for my nex.

When I mount the lens, despite turning the focus ring back and forth, nothing from infinity to stated mfd was in focus.

When I added the extension tubes that came with it, I couldn't get macro focus as well. Thus I believe it's not an adapter/flange distance issue.

So I decide to try take the lens apart. There's a rear element that could b easily screwed out, and so is the front element, with the aperture in between.

Glass-wise, there are some very minute hairline scratches and 2 micro bubbles which are only visible under direct LED, so I also believe that's not the issue. With just the front element off and the aperture stopped down, it worked like a pinhole lens, giving soft lo-fi focus. Wide open, I get soft center focus and blurred corners.

So I was hoping if any FSU lens experts here could give me some insights to what might be wrong with my lens. I'm suspecting it's either smth wrong with my front element, or there's a missing lens element in between... according to the listing, it's supposed to be a "3-element tessar design", but I only have 2? Or was the other element fused with the front/back element?

The lens was relatively cheap and shipped from Ukraine, so I don't want to go thru the trouble to return it or whatever.

find bro fatigue ?

i have met several happy owners of Industar 50-2 in m42 and it is extremely usable though.

"3-element tessar design" should have 3 pieces of glass inside the lens.

I have taken apart a m42 mount 50 mm f2.8 before using this guide Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50mm f2.8 (M42 mount) Servicing

The front and back elements are fixed position but the middle element is movable so that the lens can focus.

You can refer to the pictures in the guide.

BTW. I find that taking the lens apart is easy but putting them back need some skill. The middle element in my 50 mm lens are badly damage when I tried to assemble back the lens after cleaning. That is why I decide to ask expert for help instead of trying to clean the lens myself.

If you want to find fatigue to look at your lens, you may be disappointed.

He seem to be very busy because I have been trying to arrange an appointment with him for my 55mm f1.4 lens but he couldn't commit a date and time to meet :(

I think he is fully book for the month of March.

Oh dear. If there really is supposed to be a middle glass element, then I'm f***ed... haiz... I guess I would either keep as display or sell for parts :(

Try changing an adapter... or find someone else who has another adapter to test... sometimes it may be the adapter...

But when u turn the focusing ring, is there a slight change in the focus? Even if it's not sharp, there are still changes?

this lens is not hard to find in Sg at very reasonable price

That's the advantage of buying local. For a small premium, you can inspect the lens before you part your money!
