I have been using a Nikon D40 for the past few years, it was a wonderful system but has spoiled and the repair cost is not worth it. Therefore, I am looking to upgrade to a new Camera. as I only have one lens, it doesn't matter if it is a Canon or NIkon. I am aiming for the Canon EOS 60D with the kit lens 18-55mm which is about $1,549 from any retailer.

However, I was checking out the shops at Penisular, and was offered a Canon EOS 7D with the same kit lens 18-55mm for $1,800. Should I go for the 60D than or the 7D?? Need some expert advice from you guys.

I'm using the 60D. At the current retail price, I'd rather go for 2nd hand. You can get one around $1000.

The 70D is rumoured to be coming out soon, so if you're in the market for brand new, that is another option.

As for the 7D, I've read a lot of user comments about the autofocus performance - it seems that it might be a tricky camera to shoot with, in terms of focus accuracy. But do read the forum yourself about this... The 7D advantage is its frame rate, so if you're into sports photography, it might be the strongest point. Again, the 7D is a pretty old model, so 2nd hand may give you much better value. I think the price range is about $1,200, or even lower.

The 18-55 kit lens is okay for a while, but you're probably going to want an upgrade in a few months. Here is where you might benefit from buying second hand, many sellers offer their cameras with better lenses, from the 17-85, 15-85 and 17-55 2.8 (lowest quality to highest quality, according to opinions here).

I suggest you buy grey body from Canon Digital SLRs - Techno Gadgets - Your Reliable Source of Photo Equipments

and if you don't mind 2nd hand get the 18 - 55 from BNS.

Also if im not wrong you can get a 2nd hand 7D at around 1 - 1.1k. I got a very mint 7D for myself at 1k from bns.

Thanks so much guys for your reply! :)

The shop at Penisular told me that it was a new set for that price, which makes me wonder if it is too good a deal to be true. Read through the forum, and heard about things such as Grey Set.

Is there any drawbacks if it is a grey set? or should I just go for the safer option of getting the Canon 60D from the major retailers.

No draw back. Alot of people buy grey sets.

Technogadget has 1 year warranty, so you can bring back to them if anything.

Which shop exactly at peninsular?

Hi, might as well compare the specs/advantages of each camera to one another, then decide from there which advantages you need most, then buy that camera. When I'm still looking for my first dslr, my choices were Canon 60D & Nikon D7000.

I studied all the features, what are they for... For example, I like the articulating screen of 60D and it's video capabilities (among other things)... In the end I chose the the D7k for its dual SD card and tougher build... These are the ones that I remember, I knew back then I like both, but I have to choose one only. Maybe you can give this one a try. HTH.

Grey set = No official warranty. The Service Center will accept your camera but you will pay for everything.
Some shops offer shop warranty, which means you have to go back to the shop and claim warranty there. Either they will send for service (and you will wait) or you go for servicing and claim back the costs from the shop. Ask the shop for the details. If they appear blur or try to avoid a clear answer .. well, you should know what to do.
Also, do check the price guide for the official sets. Pairing a 7D with the 18-55 is a bit odd, in my opinion.
