1. In what area is critique to be sought?

The overall feel of this photo and the post processing done.

2. What one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?

To portray a life of a lone street artist when all he got is his paintings and pet dog.

But then, although he's alone, he don't appear to be lonely and in fact with his presence, his art works brightened up the dull and old pathway.

3. Under what circumstance is the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)

I was walking past this place to Ponte Vecchio when i spotted this man.

While everyone was zipping past him on under this chilly weather, busy taking photos and sight seeing, he sat there alone, standing out from the crowd, indulging in his passion for art.

So i can't help but walked towards him to take a pic of him.

He was aware of me taking his photo, but he just ignored me and continued with his work.

4. What the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture?

To be frank, i like this photo, that is why i wanted to see what others think of it.

Among all other photos that i had taken of him, this is the only shot where i can see his face.

He don't appear lonely or sad, but more of deep in thought.

This photo can be better if the man at the right is omitted from the photo so there will be a clear contrast of the dark hallway vs the street artist's vibrant art pieces.

Newbie here,

I like the overall feeling of the photo, the tone, the emotion of the subject, but somehow I feel a bit uncomfortable with the framing or angle.

Maybe if the alley on the right hand side was removed it will be better.

Thanks bro for offering your thoughts. Actually it didn't cross my mind to crop out the alley.

After you mention and me looking at the pic again, i think that might be an option. But from the look of it, i think i can only crop as far until the dog's leash.

I will try it out tonight and see what may be the end result! ;)

firenze firenze... its a nice place.

somehow i'm not too much a fan of the processing. it seems to watercolorish. my preference would be of course, a black and white, or a minimal toning.

i think the processing was done so much that it looks more like a painting, than a photograph.

again, mine is more of a preference thats all lah. probably will be able to find someone who likes this processing.

anyways i didnt think that was a dog. i thought it looked more like a feather duster...

I like the composition and and framing. I like it that you kept the colors, because the artpieces in the picture screamed for it.

What I think can be done better is in the color toning of your picture. Your choice of toning does not really work for me.

Overall, good job.

Thanks for your input! It is call cross processing. So i guess not everyone is ok with this kind of processing.

I was thinking of making the color tone a bit more interesting rather than the traditional kind of post process.

Sorry that it didn't work for you.

And the feather duster is confirm a dog la. In fact a cute one. Lol~ See from here:

Thanks for your view! Appreciate it.

I was playing with the tone to bring out the artist and the paintings with all other elements to blend into the background.

Here's the non cross-processed version:

The non cross-processed version color tone looks awesome. However I find that there's too much negative space, I'd prefer to have a straight view from the right hand side, against the wall. ;) Just my 2 cent

Had a go on what you have suggested:

My thoughts are: After the crop, it looks very neat which gives another kind of feel which makes the picture a little more "cheerful".

I like both original and cropped version.

xpro was something i used to do pretty often in the past. until i realise it wasn't adding value to my images and i just basically did that for the sake of making funky colors :)

but regardless of the editing, the one quality that doesn't go away, is how much this photo looks like a painting. somehow that artist face looks that way. the walls etc.

let me try my hand at something with your image.

i opted for a more muted tones look. firenze is an old city, which used to be bustling with crowds etc. it has that lost former glory emotion. felt that muted tones might work nicer.

Thanks for your suggestion! U must not be a fan of instagram right. Actually i am not a fan of instagram too. :bsmilie:

Indeed your kind of post processing tells another kind of story where the emphasis is on the alley and the artist as a whole picture.

What i tried to do was to highlight the contrast between the alley and artist, thus the more vibrant color. Guess it works for some and a no-go for others. Lol~

Yeah, another bro also suggested that the alley is to be cropped, which probably he had similar thought on the negative space. I shot this using an UWA lens so the probably why i didn't take a direct shot of the artist is cus i wanted the feel to be a bit like wide angle portrait shot.

I guess i wont be able to change the shooting angle already since i'm back. Haha~ So what i experiment was to crop off those empty space and posted it in a few earlier post to see how it turns out. Don't know how that works for you.

i like the composition here, no need to crop. the people in the alley give the pic a sense of depth. to achieve a greater contrast between the brightly lit colourful artist and the dark drab alley in the background, you can also experiment with partial conversion of the pic (background) to greyscale.
e.g.

Thanks! I kind of like that. Your version actually portrays my idea better than my own attempt, with the guy at the background now blended into the alley.

Due to my personal liking of the dog, i will probably return more colors back to the dog. :bsmilie:

OK lah. I do use insta. But usually Hudson is the effect I use. Depends on subject as usual. Xpro can work with those metallic landscape structures like towers etc.

Hdr would be interesting..fire off 3rapid bracketed exposed shots...I also think there's too much empty space further up..so if u do hdr.. it would be more lively up..but crop out would be fine..

I loved your first picture more than the others.

It gave a very surreal feel, although with a shallow depth of field would give more empathise on the artist.

Also, the reds are alittle distracting, so desaturating the reds would help with that.

Lastly, maybe try softening the picture, it seems a bit sharp and flat because of that.

I like the non-cross processed film the best. Did you use some program or photoshop script to achieve that? I think you can get a cross-processed looked if you wanted to, but you'll have to experiment with other combination.

Here are some other real cross processes that you can reference.

oldschoolphotolab.blogspot.com/2011/07/cross-processing-part-ii-kodak-and.html (add the http, I can't post links yet)

The composition is nice, expect that with this composition, your focus is on the alley and not the street artist.

I like the cropped version, I think it makes the picture more focused on the subject.

I do like the toning better on this one.
