Hi Guys,

I want to ask what is the best compact camera out there. I had the 5D M2 but felt it is rather heavy and also that I realize I do not have the time to use it much. But I still very much like good quality pictures and will be getting a compact camera next. I would also prefer it to have good video image like the 5D M2. I know many are talking about the RX100. I am seriously considering that. Any other recommendations? Mirrorless or compact bodies? How do they compare with the RX100? Any inputs will be appreciated.

Best compact out there now is this....

G1X... a much forgotton camera. After the release of the Sony RX100, people are swooning, drooling and the such over it... however before the RX100... there is the G1X which in every right is a great camera too... although do not shoot very very fast framerate and do not autofocus really that quickly... but was an excellent cam too.

The best but price also best. haha. :D

Hmm...really? Thats something to consider too. Thanks.

You asked for the best right? ;)

IQ for the RX1 will outshine your 5Dm2.

hmmm....Maybe so. But its fixed focal length at 35mm and also its not interchangable for that price.

Anyone has reviews on the LX7? Heard its pretty good as well. And the NEX-6~

Actually TS... depend on what you wanted to shoot first. Of course RX1 had the best IQ among all other compact camera and mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras (except for Leica M9) having a full frame sensor in a compact body. However, as you said or implied, the cost is abit high... plus unless you are used to the fix 35mm focal length, you might find it not to your taste. Plus, it will not necessary mean that the newer sensor held too high a difference or advantage over your 5DmkII.

Personally, I would go for the mirrorless interchangeable camera such as the Olympus OM-D (which I have and love it to bits) or Nikon V1/ J1 (which is going pretty cheaply nowadays). Of course the NEX-6 is a fabulous camera too (having the same sensor as the much famed NEX-7). LX7 is a smaller sensor compact the same class as the Olympus XZ-2 and Canon S110/ G15. Frankly speaking although these premium camera (LX7, XZ-2, S110, G15 etc) produce good quality image, but they are nowhere near a DSLR or bigger sensor compact like the RX100 and G1X, also not of the same league as mirrorless interchangeable lens camera such as the m4/3 and NEX series of cameras.

My point is, TS need to really understand and know what he/she wanted, then zoom down to some cameras, go online and read reviews, then go to the shops and handle these cameras, then see which one he/she liked most. Please be sure that there will be IQ downgrade (especially when it came to high ISO performance) of these smaller camera (except for RX1).

Thank you for your input. I would consider the mirrorless bodies as well as the rx100.

Who needs enemies when having such 'friends' ...

I would consider the mirrorless bodies as well as the rx100.

After getting the RX100 I use my mirrorless body much lesser. Mirrorless is just smaller than DSLR, it is still not a pocket-able compact.

Haha. I jumped to OMD already. Nice camera. Like it. :D
