This is a email sent out by NPD request for O+ doners.

One of our Navy servicemen, ME2 Jason Chee Weng Fai, was critically injured during deck operations onboard RSS Endeavour on 10 Dec 12. He is currently warded at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Changi General Hospital (CGH). He had since undergone several operations and his condition remains critical.

Jason will continue to require blood transfusions for subsequent operations, and the national blood supply for the O+ blood group is low at the moment.

I wish to appeal for blood donations (O+ blood group) at the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) to support Jason in his journey to recovery. Any blood donations made at HSA will go towards the National pool which will facilitate Jason's blood transfusion requirements. Details on the blood donation drive are stated as follows:

Eligibility of Blood Donors
The following criteria are required for servicemen willing to donate:
1. Blood Group O+
2. Able to pass the Health Assessment questionnaire as attached below:

*The questionnaire can also be accessed in the following internet link:
DonorCare@HSA

Donors will be screened further at the blood bank and may be rejected due to unsuitability.

Additional Info
Blood donations can be made at the Outram outlet for group donations.
The branch will only be able to accommodate 10 donors per hour so please kindly coordinate amongst your individual units to stagger the timings for donation.

Other branches listed on the HSA website do accept dedicated donors but the Outram outlet is the only one equipped for group donations. The Singapore Red Cross will be setting up a dedicated area for RSN personnel wishing to donate at the Outram outlet from tomorrow onwards.

Your NRIC/11B is required to register as a donor so do bring it along. Do inform the registration counter that you are from the Republic of Singapore Navy and donating in support of ME2 Jason Chee.

Please note that blood donation is a purely voluntary act. On behalf of Jason and his family, as well as the men and women of the Navy Family, I would like to thank you for your kind and generous support.

Just read a report from Channel News Asia knowing that the injured serviceman had lost both legs and his left hand. He is left with just a right hand with two fingers. His condition remain critical and in need of more surgery but the blood bank is running low on his blood type.

The serviceman whose blood type is O positive, is warded at Changi Hospital.

This is a very sad case. Life will never be the same for him... For those who are able to help, please help. It can be in a form of donating your blood and/ or spread the words around.

Lets pray that ME2 Jason Chee can pull through this challenge.

I am going down this saturday(my first time). And thanks for starting this thread. U have a nice soul.

The intend is good but ... You mean our blood bank got no enough o+ blood just because one person accident ???
Then war time how?

O+ is the most common blood group (thus most required) and with either A or B antigens, they can be transfused into other blood groups with Rh antigens (A+, B+) as well which is why it's rapidly depleted.

So are you going to do your part assisting a Singaporean Son in need instead of coming here with irrelevant questions or do you feel comfortable being another cynic NATO?

Blood have shelve life too.they inly cn be kept for a certain period before they r disposed of. Maybe this period is the low period.

You do understand that blood cannot be stored for a long time right?

There are other operations that requires blood tranfusions.
As I am part of the SAF as well (NS Man), I will be going down to donate blood.
Please play your part too.

Of course, i encourage all to do their part.
Just curious, how long can blood be stored in freezer ? Sorry, not in medical field ...

5 days for platelets, 42 days for red blood cells, 1 year for plasma.

Blood Donation for Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) Serviceman Jason Chee

Dear Donors,

Thank you for supporting the National Blood Programme. Please note that all your blood donation contributions have provided necessary blood support to the needs of Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) Serviceman Jason Chee, as well as those other patients in need of blood.

There is no directed blood donation in Singapore. But your contributions will:
• Undergo rigorous testing to ensure blood safety.
• Go to emergency medical needs for patients who need blood
• To ensure that family members of patients feels assured that when there is need for blood, it is readily available

We seek your kind understanding in this matter. Thank you for coming forth to save lives.

Best Regards,
The National Blood Progamme Team

How he managed to twitter with that 2 finger still puzzles me...

Has been donating except being more busy recently. Will take some time to go down donate when free. Somehow it is happy as well as a bit sad being a O which i am.
