K30 18-135 1369
K30 18-55(non wr), 50-200(wr) 1329

which is a better buy?

I would be taking photos on travel trips and most impt my JRT. Reason i getting a dslr finally is to capture more of my JRT.

I feel that you should get K30 18-55 WR and 50-200 WR for now. These are decent enough lenses that you can keep for the WR value even after you add other lenses to your collection subsequently. I think the 18-135 is ok, but you might also want to experiment with longer focal lengths.

What is JRT, btw?

I'd prefer 18-135.
1. One lens w/ comprehensive focal lengths
2. Close focus
3. Well made
4. Easier to sell and 'trade up' if you need to in the future
5. WR all the way (18-135mm)

Whats JRT??

I go with JK

The 18-135mm give better IQ compare to 18-55mm

Use it first and get a 55-300mm if u need longer reach next time :)

K30 with 18-135

by the way, JRT means

JRT Jack Russell Terrier
JRT Junctional Recovery Time - Medicine (DMAA)
JRT Jumbo Roll Tissue (bathroom tissue)
JRT Jugoslovenska Radio-Televizija (Jugoslav radio and television)
JRT Joint Readiness Training
JRT Justin Randall Timberlake (member of NSYNC)
JRT Journal of Religious Thought (Howard University School of Divinity; Washington, DC)
JRT Joseph Rank Trust (charity)
JRT JR Tolkien (author)
JRT Job Relations Training

Jack Russel Terrier! lol

most prob SAT make my purchase.. any things to look out for?

SAT is a day ...... Saturday

If it matters to me that i need a kit lens that is compact and the in-camera flash won't cast a shadow, then the choice has to be 18-55 WR.

If the above is not a requirement then 18-135... its a great one-lens solution (24-200 on 35mm format), it's got a quick and reliable DC AF motor & of course, the WR means you not scared whether rain, dust, sand, snow, etc, making it a great travel lens.

IQ may not be prime standard and there could be better but it's not horrible... Pentax 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 WR - a set on Flickr

& if you want to explore longer FLs then get the 50-200 or 55-300 later separately. If you like Pentax enough and have deeper pockets then maybe even DA* 60-250

I'm not so sure about this - I admit I haven't used the lens before but my impression was always that the overlapping range was comparable with the 18-135 having a slight edge. At the long end the 18-135 is soft.

I do agree that the 18-135 has better build quality and is probably easier to unload (that is, if you intend to unload later on). Anyways, the 50-200 doesn't have immaculate IQ either (being a kit lens), but is reasonable enough, and has a slight edge over the 18-135's longer focal lengths, especially when it comes to corner performance.

I guess another factor that you would want to consider is if you actually wish to avoid changing lenses a lot. The 18-135 would have most of your commonly used focal lengths covered. The 18-55 can be a bit short sometimes when it comes to shooting pets.

If it's a dog then best to get a fast lens...

Depends on your definition of fast ;). Fast as in large aperture is one thing but if it cannot focus quick, you also will not get the shot.

I had a problem trying to get a picture of a dog (who won't stay still) once using an FA 50 1.4; I just couldn't get the K-x to lock focus. Luckily the dog was at my home, so when i switched over to my 18-135mmm, "BANG!", decisively caught the dog and got the shot (all on high ISO).

It's not the cleanest of images but at least i got a picture compared to attempts with the FA 50 1.4.

I never own a 18-135mm too. But according to our own user review by fw , I rem he did mention it's slightly better in term of IQ compare to 18-55mm . However when compare to 50-200mm I am not sure which is better as 50-200mm iq was also know to be better then 18-55mm.

For the price pay for , feel 18-135mm is a better buy as there are a lot more option for tele in the market , like the 55-300mm or even tamron 70-300mm at a good price .

Oh, hrm... I always switch over to manual focus if I have trouble focusing with AF... So don't really care about focusing speed. :p The f/1.4 is quite bright... So not that hard to MF either..

That's true, one other option is to just get the 18-55 kit and grab the other telephoto lenses available. Tamron 70-300mm should be a steal now... Especially if you drop by HK for holiday. :bsmilie:

That's how I pair it too . Ha . 18-55mm Wr with dal 55-300mm .

But I still got a 17-50 to stand by . Hahaha

my JRT is fast very fast.... i am getting a DSLR cos of her.... any lenses to recommend for catching up with her moves?

if budget not constrain. just buy a k30 body. pair it with DA*1650 n 50135. then forget about upgrading n lookinh at other lens. save some room for prime lens posion later on.
