Hesitating between the two.

Has anyone tried both len before?

I read the photozone review that seems the advantage of the G lens is higher resolution and better bokeh. but from the demo picture of the photozone, seems I can't conclude the same for bokeh. any bro tried in field?

and which one focus faster?

Thanks!

Forget about Photozone. I feel it's generally biased towards the C camp & most Nikon lenses dont seem to be ever good enough. Reviews are brief & boring. And sample pictures there are but ho-hum.

I had the D lens & was reluctant to change as it was quite good, with high IQ, fast AF & solid build. But eventually I got the G lens (at a cheaper price!). The G lens is simply superb! AF accurate & the lens is sharp, as sharp as or even sharper than the F1.4G, losing out only in the bokeh. Used all 3 lens for thousands of shots. Bokeh for the F1.8G lens is definitely much better than the F1.8D lens.

Check out the review here Nikon 85mm f/1.8G Review Cheers!

Thanks for the recommendation !

Hi TS, me like to know more for this lens too, don't mind I hijack awhile. Thanks.

Advice needed for this 1.8G. How is the quality couple with D800. Can it take the 36mp well. Can't afford the 1.4G version.
Thanks.

Why you think it cannot handle the 36MP? :bsmilie:

Imho, most nikon primes can "take" 36MP, if u are referring to lenses' being ability to out-resolve the sensor..

If you can't afford the f/1.4G version, then the f/1.8G is the best you can get your hands on anyway. So get it if you need the 85mm perspective. I don't see the relevance of the question.

But just so to address your concern, I have seen output from the 85mm f/1.8G on a D800 and it is certainly well above acceptable.

Thanks for asking. ..
I may not afford f1.4G now, but still hovering around whether to buy f1.8G or not...so looking for better reasons to buy it, trying to convinced myself...it just me... ;-)
90% of my time I'm using 24-70...now there are friends 'chieo' me for model shoot. I can still use this lens, no problem with it. Just that lots of user praising this 85 best for model....so hands started to itch loh...lol....

Well, 85mm is indeed one of the "standard" prime lens for portraiture, but calling it a "best for model" or "model lens" sounds stupid enough :bsmilie:

Reason why 85mm is a favorite, is first it's FOV is decently tight for a half-body portrait or if you stand closer, maybe a head-to-shoulder kind of portrait shot. Most 85mm primes have negligible distortions so you don't need to worry if you'll get distortions at the edges compared to a 35mm or even 50mm focal length, or even a zoom lens' barrel distortion (primes generally suffer less barrel distortion, and the 85mm is really near negligible).

Primes is also generally known to have better IQ than zooms, and also it's fast if you are aiming for some bokehlicious portrait or subject isolation or using natural light under low light conditions.

If you don't know what you're buying into, you won't notice the difference between your shot with the 24-70 zoom and this 85mm prime and soon you'll wonder what you've been paying for, even if it's $100 (of course the 85mm isn't this cheap) and if you're wasting money.

Generally I have no problems with the 85mm f/1.8G. I've owned both the 85mm f/1.4G and 85mm f/1.8G. I can safely tell you, it works fine on my D800E and the f/1.8 performs as good as the f/1.4. Of course, the f/1.4G have advantage at wide open sharpness but it's not like heaven-and-earth difference. Their sharpness level are both at excellent range of the MTF chart when stopped down to f/5.6.

My advise is, unless you really have a thing for 1) The gold ring, 2) You need weather sealing 3) The 9 blade aperture and being very anal about the OOF "bokeh balls", then pay for the f/1.4G. If not, you can get the f/1.8 at about 30-35% of the f/1.4G

there is no "best lens" for anything, just "suitable lens". on a sunny day outdoor model shoot, i like using 70-200. you have to understand why and how 85 would be more suitable than your 24-70 in certain conditions and situations.

Thanks avsquare & Alan Chan for your advice.
Will maybe loan one to try out and see what really I want. And yes, 70~200 is in the wishing list too...lol....
Cheers!!

Haha.. My wish list is the 35mm f/1.4G (not really fond of the 35mm f/2D, wished that Nikon come out with the f/1.8G FX version) and the 135mm f/2

Actually the 70-200mm VR2 for portrait shoot is just nice.

Yeah... but it's a piece of big and heavy glass..

I'm actually more keen in the 35mm than the tele range. I hardly shoot at 200mm for portraits. Actually, at most is 85mm.. hardly exceed it, if I do, it would be 135mm. That's why the preference for prime than the big 70-200 zoom ;p

The 35mm f2D is not preform as good on D800/E and the 135mm DC, I hope you can life with CA.
