been thinking.... why do we still need the "slr" bit.

thought the reflex portion is meant mainly for film?

with advanced sensor as that used in D800, why the hell do we still need the lens reflex system. see directly from sensor lah, since it is said that sensor is so good, world best etc etc. should be able to provide good VF view right?

i know mirrorless is viewing thru sensor but on back LCD.
i talking about viewing thru sensor from VIEWFINDER. why is nikon still having reflex mirror in camera like D800, D4 etc. what is the advantage? for the sake of the name DSLR??? i supposed with that kind of sensor quality, electronic VF should be able to match optical??

why not you google the differences between EVF and OVF? I'm sure there are many articles around.

I believe the A99 uses the highest resolution EVF now. Go try it and see if you think it can match OVF. Nothing beats seeing it for yourself.

OVF does not necessarily means oil spots. It just happened on one model recently. I've owned 9 DSLRs in the past 10 years, none had that issue.

Still on the oil spots issue? I've been seeing you complaining here all day long. Does it solve the problem?

In any case, I don't see how EVF prevents oil and dust or whatever. As long as it's interchangeable lens system and you need to change lens, dust and dirt will enter sooner or later.

not sure how bad the oil spot issue on D800 is.. but on my D7000 after the service by NSC, its pretty ok now.. so not sure whats the fuss is about.. i prefer OVF though.. had try out the EVF in shops.. don really like them..

I am using one anyway and enjoying the wysiwyg previewing in evf before picture taken. Never possible in ovf.

Personally I prefer OVF over EVF because:
- EVF gives a noticable lag.
- Sometimes EVF gives not-so-natural brightness /colors.. especially on difficult lighting situations.
- From what I know, DSLRs with EVF suck more battery juice compared with their OVF counterparts.

Again, this is my opinion. Your miles may vary.

Not only the VF, the focusing is not really that fast  compared to a DSLR.

Maybe will take a while to close the gap.

But I really love the compactness and weight of the mirrorless.

Hmm? Not really.. some systems with EVF have great AF. Example: Sony A77.

agree with you Sir on the first point.
but as mentioned one potential advantage is the wysiwyg preview which give quite accurate representation of the final captured image. not to mention less moving parts and lighter weight advantage over ovf.
