D700 Shutter Spoil?

Hi fellow Nikon gurus,

I was photographing for an event when my camera suddenly stops taking photos. Good thing it was almost at the end of the event. All of a suddenly, the shutter sound sounded differentand that was when I knew something was wrong.

Am wondering if any of you guys have encountered something like this?

This is the image capture and all subsequent photos taken end up like this.



Did a shutter count test which shows: Shutter Count 38567

If it's a shutter issue, where can I get it repaired? Or at least diagnosed?

Bring it to Nikon Service Center.

And if your camera is not under warranty anymore, you will most probably have to pay for the shutter replacement, if indeed it is the shutter.

Please note that rated shutter count is only a guide, not a guarantee. So 38k doesn't mean the shutter has tons of life left.

U cant fix it yourself ..

R u using 3rd party batt grip ? I know some grip will cause shutter jam when the batt in the grip run empty, and switch over to camera batt. So it might not be really a shuttle issue with the cam.

Yup, the battery run low when this happened. I was using an original Nikon Battery grip though.

Trust me .. u can simulate the problem again .. just use a low power batt in grip (say left 5% power), start shooting .. most likely the fault will happen again.

I believe its a problem with the cam .. its unable to switch power properly .. not a shutter problem.

What happened was that I forgot to load a battery into the camera. I was just running on the battery in the grip only.

So it Nikon Service Centre my best bet? Am I able to tweak around with the camera to get it to work again? Gee

Why not you just try with full power, and if the problem is resolved you won't have to go down to NSC?

I once had a shutter failed on me and it doesn't look like that. You get a straight shadow across the frame. Are you sure you heard the shutter and not the mirror slap?

Are you able to see a normal view through the viewfinder, as before? If the mirror mechanism is faulty, you'd probably see something odd.

Yes I second suggestion of putting in a fully charge batt.
Then go menu and do the mirror up for cleaning .
Then shut down power to reset shuttle and mirror .
If it's not jam or damage it should reset back to normal position.
Try it out then see if you need to go NSC or bro fatigue also can .
