Recommendation for entry level DSLR

Hi all,

I am considering buying a dslr. Looked at mirrorless, dun like the thought of having no viewfinder and smaller sensors. Price wise not that good either.

What I will be shooting is mostly everything, maybe not taking macro. Hence an entry level dslr would do, maybe with a 18-105 lens.

So looking at entry level dslr, I read that Nikon D3200 is one of the best value dslr with excellent picture quality. Between that and Canon 600D, which would be a better choice?

if you got more friends with nikon gear, go for nikon. like that by borrowing gear here and there, you save marnie! i got more friends with canon, so i chose canon. but if your friends all kiam siap one, then hard lah hard lah,,,,,,heh heh heh

I will say go for d3200. It is rated #9 in dxomark's top camera sensors, outperforming some medium format sensors, and ranked ahead of 5dmk.

New is 899 @ ms color. Good price i say

Check around funan. Some quoted me 850 and even 830 :3

Checked a lot of reviews and comparisons before shortlisting to these two. Mainly reviews criticise the lack of aeb and lens motor in d3200, which I don't think makes quite a big difference to me. The only reason I am considering 600d is because it has a flip out screen.

Few of my friends have dslrs. Most of them that do own 18-105 and no other lens, so cannot borrow. =(

The picture quality cannot be challenged by other entry levels, but only fear is the high pixel count will cause a lot of noise under low light conditions. In that case, what can I do to light up the picture without upping the iso too much?

Check around funan. Some quoted me 850 and even 830 :3

Well, I don't really like the idea of asking around funan or sls. Anyway, I was thinking of kit 2 for d3200. MS color quoted me 1160 for d3200 + 18-105 and 899 for kit 1. What do you think?

Sony and Samsung mirrorless cams have APS-C sensors. This is the the same size as what you might find inside DSLR cameras. The 4/3rds sensor inside Olympus and Panasonic cameras is only slightly smaller than APS-C and performs extremely well.

Quick question to the experts. If I am trying to do burst mode of say capturing water splashing out of a cup, other than setting the shutter speed to high and using manual focus, any other way to capture maximum number of pictures? Last time I played with a 600D in burst mode, could not reach the 3.7 fps even though I set the shutter speed to 1/1600. Did I do something wrong?

no. That's the limit on the Canon. If you want faster FPS, get a Sony SLT. They make the Nikon sensors anyway.

There are mirrorless with EVFs. I think you haven't really explored beyond the "limited mindset" brands.

Viewfinder mirrorless cameras:

The battery life on these cameras are good enough for at least 400+ shots.

Most of the new cams come with screens that don't wash out in sunlight.

I personally think bulk and weight are more critical considerations compared to looks.

Shutter speed and fps are different. Your shutter speed is dependent on the shutter but your FPS depends on both yor shutter and how fast the mirror can get out of The way. For flip out monitors you could perhaps consider the D5100?

Why not? Some shops in funan can give you a lower price or even more attractive package options than MS colour.

Only 400+? Not familiar with mirrorless but 400+ is rather low in my opinion.

Well, since they are the major brands, their products are tried and tested, more reliable IMHO. Any problems, there's a large community that can help. Other than major brands, I have considered pentax kr which is a good camera but seems like it has bad noise performance and its beyond my budget. So I decided to play safe and go with the more common brands. =)

Sorry, I don't really understand the complex internal workings of the camera other than how the light enters the camera to the sensor. My budget is capped at $1200 and below. Besides the D3200 has beter IQ, I heard early next year coming out with D5200?

Ever wondered why the D4 have like 11fps but the d3200 have only 4fps? This mostly have to do with the mirror being able to move fast enough to achieve that rate of frames per second. Lower end cameras = lower end mirror actuators = lower cost = happier customer.

Shops bros here would recommend include SLR Revolution, Cathay photo, TK photo, John 3:16 and some say Alan photo. You can call or email them for an equity first before going down. Blacklisted chopshops are joys electronics, Bally photo, etc etc.

Do a search and you will find all these. Check the price guides section and you will find a list of recommended shops. Those not on The list are usually chop tourist carrot shops, shops that sell grey sets as local sets, shops that sell refurb sets as new sets and all sorts of other scam jobs. u can try them but don't expect too much.

Then there is an online shop called techno gadgets where they deal with grey sets and have very good reviews on customer service. In fact they have a mass sales thread here in CS.

Always ask what is included in the package before considering their price. Some may have a last minute change in their package, "forgetting to put something in" "no stock" or even "company policy is that you must buy a bag, tripod and memory card" kind of sales tactics. If
you ever meet such a salesman, walk straight out of the shop

EDIT: it all depends on the shop, really. But even if it is not, you should just invest in a better tripod. The free tripod that they give is usually extremely weak and flimsy. Better to not take and ask for more discount or trade in with top up to get a better tripod. Cathay has a large selection of vanguard tripods and bags and TK have a large selection of sirui tripods and think tank bags. Might as well buy from all these shops and wrestle for more discounts as you are buying so many items
