Here's another reason why you should not charge too cheap... in case this happens 2u

The client sounds like a mean bully.

Btw, the youtube guy is the one invented the Gary Fong thing?

One of the top comments in YouTube was:

"
This letter will get the attorney disbarred. No lawsuit needed, just take it to the state bar asssociation's client-protection division."

Hopefully that will work.

The client sounds like a dumb bully. He could very likely lose his lawyer's license but pulling this stunt.

Yes Gary Fong invented the Gary Fong thing.

good commentary and professional photographers must charge accordingly and must have written contracts

let me guess, its a law school grad holding himself out as a professional lawyer ? :D
(usually isn't it the reverse, GWC masquerading as experienced pro...?) ironic if so. (Btw i have nothing against GWCs. literally none of my biz)

I am sorry but I have to comment that your title is inappropriate. The issue in the video is NOT that PG charge too cheap. It is the lawyer bullying the PG regardless of how much the PG charge.

I am sick of professional PGs every day complaining others charge too cheap and spoil their market. It would give me the impression that these so called professional PGs most likely can't secure enough bookings and have to blame everyone else. As if their constant complaining about others charging too little will change anything at all.

I am sick of senior photographers trying to teach newcomers business sense, then get trashed in forums by amateurs.

Amateurs messed up the pro's industry prices, the pros tried to fix it by public education, the pros get trashed again for 'blaming everyone else'.

You all notice some of the pro photographers who were posting actively a few years ago no longer post?

I guess in this world there are always people who are cheap and want others to be cheap like them, at the same time, there are also people who are expensive and also want others to be expensive like them.

Career photographers happens to prefer the later. Is that so wrong?

Since it is not in the interest of senior photographers to agree with newbies charging a lower rate, there is no reason for them to agree or and might even be good to try to educate newbies not to lowball market.

Since it is also not in the interest for newcomers to charge a professional rate yet, it is also not their interest to listen to the seniors till they are good enough to charge a professional rate.

There is S$2.00 chicken rice in some neighbourhood if you try hard to find, but personally I prefer the Tiong Bahru Chicken Rice opposite Central Clarke Quay as it is affordable at about $5-6 per pax for a set of 4 people. However some people prefer to go to Mandarin Orchard for the famous Chatterbox Restaurant Chicken Rice at S$22++.... oh yeah I also heard one of the head chef from Mandarin Orchard went to open his own at Downtown East a few years ago, remember it was about S$5.00. I sometimes hear people complain about S$5.50 - S$6.50 Chicken Rice being too expensive, taste normal but at expensive location.

the rational is if u charge a wedding too low. just one fine day, u get sue for nothing, u could easily go bankrupt. so part of the cost when u take in to account is the possibility of getting sued. u need dough right to prevent such cases.

What makes you think professional photographers has no rights to "make noise"?

first thing first, professional photography is a trade, when the trade is invaded by "outsiders", the "outsiders" going around everywhere offering cheap or even free services, potential harming the living hood of the photographers and the industry, can't the photographers inside this trade do something about it?

and what kind of measure did the professional photographers really do? Not by slamming down "invaders", instead offering advices, workshops to help the "invaders" how to conduct business.

but to tell you the truth, most people have no patient, only keen to make some quick buck, can't even make the cut to be in the trade, going around find guinea pigs, or offer themselves as guinea pigs, more than 80% quit within a year, maybe one or two left after three years.

tell me, professional photographers have no rights to do anything about these?

If you are doing it professionally, should get yourself indemnity coverage from the insurer.

hmm any info about this? but i guess the premium will be high for new businesses (thinking of car insurance , the more experience and zero accidents, lesser pemiums u paying).

My company has this professional insurance thing. Boss scare we screw him up hehe. Got per job basis or long term basis, premium depends on the amount covered, and also previous record (like 0 accidents in the car insurance). In the event things happen and got sued, the insurer will pay the damage. Some client will request you to have an amount insured in case they want to sue you. They not interested that you declare bankrupt and go to jail, most important they got their money back.

Many hobbyists wanna play wedding photographer, they see the expensive gear, the glamour (sometimes), and the beautiful work produced. They didn't see the ugly sides. Nor are they able to still do it despite the ugly sides. A day job and a hobby is easier and more enjoyable.

Ask any of our regular wedding togs here they will tell you the sad side of this genre of work. I bet almost all wedding togs had been through the 'do a damn hard job, still delivered great photos and service, YET get blamed and flamed for some unreasonable petty stuff'.

I been thru these few times myself early on and during then when I rise prices it's often due to this very reason. If I have to suffer nonsense on top if a very hard job, then as least I am well compensated. Somehow that worked and by operating on a higher price point things are strangely, easier. In fact my first price rise was double my current price then. I lost all referrals from people looking at that price point and business was quiet for more than a year, I had to take a part time job and cut down on personal expenses, while the slower pace I concentrated on perfecting a different style. when business eventually picks up again I was reborn, my business, my work product, my clientele.

Even as often say we need to screen clients carefully to filter put the undesirables, we can't screen the family members or the bridesmaids. No offense to females but most of the time groomsmen are gems to work with, maybe it's the soccer team spirit or the army NS spirit kicks in guys forget about self and concentrate on being helpful. Bridesmaids too often whine and whine, bitch and twitch about small things, come on girls, do your princess attitude on another day, this is your friends wedding stop bitching. There are exceptions of course. Some bridesmaids are really great ladies.

So when actual day wedding togs are charging cheaply (below $2000 range), it really just does themselves a disfavor.
