Many hobbyists wanna play wedding photographer, they see the expensive gear, the glamour (sometimes), and the beautiful work produced. They didn't see the ugly sides. Nor are they able to still do it despite the ugly sides. A day job and a hobby is easier and more enjoyable.
Ask any of our regular wedding togs here they will tell you the sad side of this genre of work. I bet almost all wedding togs had been through the 'do a damn hard job, still delivered great photos and service, YET get blamed and flamed for some unreasonable petty stuff'.
I been thru these few times myself early on and during then when I rise prices it's often due to this very reason. If I have to suffer nonsense on top if a very hard job, then as least I am well compensated. Somehow that worked and by operating on a higher price point things are strangely, easier. In fact my first price rise was double my current price then. I lost all referrals from people looking at that price point and business was quiet for more than a year, I had to take a part time job and cut down on personal expenses, while the slower pace I concentrated on perfecting a different style. when business eventually picks up again I was reborn, my business, my work product, my clientele.
Even as often say we need to screen clients carefully to filter put the undesirables, we can't screen the family members or the bridesmaids. No offense to females but most of the time groomsmen are gems to work with, maybe it's the soccer team spirit or the army NS spirit kicks in guys forget about self and concentrate on being helpful. Bridesmaids too often whine and whine, bitch and twitch about small things, come on girls, do your princess attitude on another day, this is your friends wedding stop bitching. There are exceptions of course. Some bridesmaids are really great ladies.
So when actual day wedding togs are charging cheaply (below $2000 range), it really just does themselves a disfavor.
