turkey trip

hey guys me, wifey and in law will be going to turkey in august ( during the hari raya i guess ) its a group tour.
ive been to istanbul for few hours and had a few hours of city tour. but notting much.....


so im wondering what lenses should i bring.

im thinking about carrying

d700+ BG
16-35 f4 vr
24-70 f2.8
50 1.4
35 2.0
sb 910 with bunch of spare eneloop batteries.
thinktank urban disguise 60 v2.0
sirui travel tripod

wonder should i bring my 70-200 ? its going to be quite heavy and i think i have to loose my prime cos no more space on my bag.

and secondly how safe or ( un-safe ) is turkey any experiences ?

i dont think there will be anything to worry about, more so you are traveling on group tour.

One can spend a week in Istanbul and feeling there isnt enough time to cover everything.
it really depends on what interests you I guess. Its a very culturally rich city.
For me I'll just take the 24-70 and some spare batteries
Istanbul is generally safe, but like others have said, just use some common sense

How many days in your tour? What are the places you are going to or only to Istanbul? Istanbul is very safe even at night but the next day I left, a suocide bomber blew himself up. This is a rare occurrence.

Wide to medium focal lengths are good. Fast lenses even better because of the interiors of the mosques, and if you have free-and-easy time, some of the back streets. I don't think you'll miss the 70-200 unless close-ups of fine details on the mosques are important to you.

Hi TS, I spent 10 days touring Turkey couple of years back. Considering you are travelling with wife and in-law, the gears that you listed is way way too much. And carrying all that gear in a UD60! You'd be totally exhausted. Here is what I'd suggest:
D700 w/o battery grip but take spare batteries.
16-35/f4 (for landscapes, sceneries e.g. when shooting from high up in a hot air balloon)
50/f1.4 ( for indoors and darker allies or interiors)
70-200/f2.8 ( for zooming into details, or for capturing some portraits discreetly )
Forget about the rest of your list. Use your energy to observe, explore and shoot more photos instead of just lugging gear around.
Also, travelling on group tour mean getting on and off tour buses, etc. travel light and come back with more photos instead of back and shoulder ache.
My two cents worth.

yeah im thinking of leaving my 24-70 or 70-200. im still reaserching some photos of tukey trips. so i can decided what i want to do.

oh yah would it better if i carry my lowerpro x100 roller bags or it would be more trublesome for me getting in and out of the bus.

sorry for the nubie dumb question its been a while i go for a holiday in a tour usually, free and easy so i can take my time and stuff....but this time in-law is comming hahahahhaha.

If you are going to Cappadocia and taking the hot air balloon, you don't have enough space to change lenses in the basket. The 24-70mm would be better than the 16-35mm. I would not take the 70-200mm. The 16-35mm would be good for interior architectural shots of mosques, historical ruins and landscapes. Bring a 50mm f1.4 or f1.8 for indoor shots or for photographing food or street photography at night which is safe in Istanbul.

diffinitly ill be brining a 50 1.4 and maybe a 35 f2
the 24-70 and 16-35 is on my list.
but regarding the 70-200 i can not decided yet hahahhaha. ive seen some member photos for turkey trips and they wish they have brought some short of tele photo lense.

for me BG is a must because its just a habbit for me to do portait in vertical position and for me has better handling. maybe it just me.....

The basket is big, but it will be crammed with 20 people on average, if I'm not mistaken. Its like changing lenses in an MRT train during rush hours
If you take too much picture, in the end you will miss the whole ballooning experience.

I did Turkey with 3 lenses, all on an Olympus system (so x2 for the FF equivalent focal lengths) :
- 9-18mm F4-5.6
- 14-54mm F2.8-3.5
- 40-150mm F4-5.6

I remember changing between the wide angle and standard zoom a lot. Hardly used the telephoto, except for sunsets. Can't remember what lens I used for the balloon trip though.

In your case, I would bring the 16-35mm, 24-70mm, and a telephoto that is lighter than the 70-200mm.

Depending on which operator u go with, there are different sized baskets, but yes, most of them are sized for abt 16..... I've seen 4-men baskets....
As for changing lens, its up to individual lor......

You will have standing room for one person in the basket. Changing lenses will be very difficult and you may even drop your lens when you are in a rush. Buy a second hand D5100, fit it with your 16-35mm and you D700 with the 70-200mm. Your wife takes one cam and you, the other or you hand 2 cameras on your neck. You cover a good zoom range.

Really depends on your shooting style.
i may miss out some of your detail post - are you going out of Istanbul in these 12 days?
IMO, Take 24-70. I will take 70-200, though it is painfully heavy, but you will be rewarded, trust me. Unless you can a get lighter equivalent.
Agree with others, leave your battery grip. Unless you are really taking photos non stop, you don't even need extra battery. I believe D700 can take at least - 500 shots? charge every day good enough. Especially you are not going during winter.

For second body option I just sold my d300s n d7000. A bit premature hahaha
As everyone said I will not bring my bg

And maybe I'm bringing two cam bags one bag will be a messenger thinktank UD 60 or some thing smaller and lowepro x100 rolling backpack
Messenger bag will be my go to bag and the x100 will be my other bag to store the 70-200 or other equipment that I don't need

Newbie in DSLR and appreciate advice from experts in the forum.

Will be going for a Turkey 10 days package tour in Dec 2012. Consider the winter attire in my luggage, and how inconvenient to quick change lens in winter wear, I am trying to minimize my photo gear.

Must bring:
1. Nikon D3200 DSLR
2. SB-400
3. Sigma 18-250
4. Sigma - 10-20mm F4
5. Canon S100
6. Olympus TG-1 (for raining weather)

Consider to bring:
1. Sigma 50mm F1.4
2. Rokinon 8mm
3. Canon IXUS 510 (for pocketable camera with long zoom).
4. Fiber carbon Monopod? or GorillaPod Hybrid?

Any kind advice is appreciated as I am carrying a Lowepro AW102 bag, which can put limited gears.
